"You are the best husband," she said as she fought to compose herself. "I should never have doubted you. I thought you would not want me any more after what happened. But you do love me anyway."
"Of course, I do," I said. "Did I not vow to love you in good times and bad, in sickness and health? Madeleine, I told you I love you through thick and thin. Whatever happens, we'll see it through together."
"Thank you," she said sleepily. "I do love you so, Robert."
It was a good thing we got our lovemaking in when we did, for the very next night was the last one I would spend in my wife's arms for quite awhile.
