Never liked the tartan undertrews much myself but knickers were excellent. Easy to pee down the leg (or any other activity solo or assisted!) Mostly nowadays I wear bamboo (!) boxer briefs green or red depending on which tartan I'm wearing. Incredibly sexy and comfortable but now soaking wet after reading your story.

I agree that girl's school knickers were a good choice indeed the only choice for kilted men generally and kilted dancers in particular for many years before coloured underwear for men became available.

I wore them myself for many years.
