An interesting start.

Were there bears at large in Victorian England? Or did Dr Lampert live in Canada?

I liked the fact that you've not given too much away in your opening chapter, merely wetting our appetite. It reminded me of the film Road to Wellville, the main character, the impotent Dr Kellogg had a problem with masturbation and another 'doctor' conducted 'pelvic manipulations'.

Looking forward to further episodes.

A waste of my time. No indication of what is to follow, and, therefore, I will not read any further chapters

Bears

There have been no bears in the UK for many centuries.

you can write. readers Here expect a short story. you only have intro, and 3 persons that could become the main. i hope to follow the rest...I can see a good read in the making.

Insure / ensure

There are a couple of instances where you use 'insure' when I think you mean 'ensure'. And the anachronistic bear. It's a good introduction, and you skilfully establish an entertaining dynamic tension between the two protagonists which encourages the reader to go to the next chapter.
