Little boy thinks but he does not feel.
Touched early and wrong, he wonders what's real.
Formative years, full of distrust and lies.
Protection built up and torn down, yet still he tries.

Boy becomes man, and is troubled, still.
Life brought confusion and challenged his will.
Man is touched anew, as he walks with he.
Their fingers entwined, he wonders what will be.

The sun shines bright with the promise he can
Try again, this time with a man.
Too soon, too fast, how does he know
If his heart will break or continue to grow.

Man likes who he is and who he can be
As he decides that his life could be with he.
Man may risk his son and his wife
To feel whole and happy with his new life.

He will say goodbye with grace
Aware of the pain he will see on her face.
This has been done by others for so long
As he heard through many a poem and song.

He hopes and he prays that new love will grow.
What it's like, he really must know.
Fleeting thoughts worry him and he looks to the sky.
The stars convey hope, so he decides to try.

Will family and friends drop from view the day
That man chooses man because he is gay.
Will others understand that the two must be
He with him and him with he.

Different, yet alike, from the same cloth they were cut.
They talk of the future yet their eyes are not shut.
Tough times lie ahead and they know that they must
Stay firm in their resolve and cherish their trust.

They talk on the phone and write emails galore.
Their love is real yet different than ever before.
They look and they smile, with a loving glance;
What they have is much more than just a romance.
