Gas stop
convenience store
she climbed in
shut the door,
Said to me
thanks for the ride
shifted the truck
into drive,

Pulled back on
the state highway
she asked if I
was going her way,
I said I was
she could too
that is what
we decided to do,

Talked about
hitch hiking alone
asked if she
had a home,
Wasn’t that ugly
wasn’t that cute
that question was
rather moot,

It got to be
late afternoon
thinking to stop
driving soon,
Started to look
for a motel
stars came out
the sun fell,

Paid some money
for a room key
asked would she like
to sleep with me,
Said she would
if I didn’t mind
was short of cash
in a bind,

Beside the motel
a diner was there
undid the ribbon
a hand through her hair,
I ordered meatloaf
she ordered it too
it wasn’t great
but it would do,

At the liquor store
big bottle of wine
back to the room
only to find,
Life on the road
can offer surprises
sometimes with
unexpected prizes,

Back at the diner
the next day
coffee breakfast
and on our way,
Another motel
and then again
we reach the ocean
and jumped right in …
