Decent story...

...but the ending was way, way too rushed. It was going along fine, but it seems as if the author suddenly felt the rest had to be finished in two paragraphs. "To make a long story short, we're staying together for now, but there are problems. The end." Even the results from the lie detector test were never really explained. Why the sudden ending?

AnonymousAnonymousalmost 15 years ago
Not Bad

I thought a little more detail at the end would have been nice also, the answers to the question why espically. He needs to go get layed by someone himself, that might help also. Thanks for story.

Too short...

I agree with the first two comments, the ending was especially rushed. The man is acting in his own best interest, but how did it work out? I'd also like to see more of the wife's side of the story.

Has getting caught in this way changed her, made her a better woman or just more careful. One thing that makes us human is the ability to learn from our mistakes. I want to know if she learned anything or not. Has she changed?

The only clue is that she was pissed at her husband for losing her job. That would imply she wasn't ready to make major life changes to atone for her cheating.

You've left the story open, I hope that you'll consider a follow up after a few years, perhaps told from the wife's POV.

AnonymousAnonymousalmost 15 years ago
One more time....

Good concept, well written, and a nice flow....but incomplete. I have to agree with the other posts, the ending felt rushed to the point of incomplete. I do not mind an open ended story, but this did not feel open ended just not finished at all. Overall...a good read.

AnonymousAnonymousalmost 15 years ago
Another good one

I've enjoyed all of your stories. I agree with the previous comments as well. The writing was quick and effective with not a lot of unecessary backstory. But once the drama built to its peak, it didn't seem to follow through. Fortunately the open ending allows for an opportunity to resolve their relationship.

Decent story, writing needs help

Okay, get the flame throwers ready.
It was a decent idea, and not bad, exactly; but, pet peeve time, I cannot abide a writer who can't tell the difference between "your" and "you're." I mean, it's so so simple, and it's like reading sandpaper to me. Also, the punctuation was inconsistent.
Like I said, pet peeves. Who would be hurt by writing correctly? In my case, it would make the story flow better.
Not bad, but definitely needs improvement.

Risq_001Risq_001almost 15 years ago
I'm still trying to figure out your ending?

I don't fault you for the story, but the ending kind of felt anti-climatic.

- He finds out his wife is cheating on him, on the day he tried to do something romantic to fix their marriage

- He finds out if he divorces her, he's screwed. While I'm one for child support, I've always felt some of those laws are a "tad" bit over zealous in claiming to protect the kids interest. And yes, while I've never been divorced, I have watched more divorces than I care from the side lines and it always amazes me it doesn't matter who cheats, the wife gets alimony (almost always) and child support. Regardless the husband always seems to get punished, even if he's not the one cheating in the marriage and his wife wants a divorce. Go figure

- Having sex with your wife after finding out she's cheating is a sign of forgiveness in the law. And something that you can never use or bring up again legally for any reason. So by this I guess he's basically forgiven his wife in the story

- Lie detector questions really only work well with "yes/no" type of questions. If you talk to a polygraph tech/expert they will tell you complex questions don't work on the machine. So his list of questions wouldn't really work for the marriage

- Why insist on an STD test if he still going to have sex with her? I mean if it is really a concern why not wait until the test are complete? It takes about 6 months on average for HIV antibodies to appear, even though there are some quicker test, they aren't definitive always.

- Making her quit her job, and making Rick move away from his family was just revenge? I guess I'm curious why? I mean he could have just have easily just said "Your life with Rick is your life, I'm going to start my own that doesn't involve you like yours with Rick doesn't involve me", but I guess I'm at a loss for how this is revenge?

At the end of the story he's in the same position he was in before it started. His wife is now estranged (they are having pity sex and she is upset he got her fired), they aren't really communicating, they are just there for the kids because it is easier and cheaper than divorcing her, and he's changed all his benefits away from her.

To me at the end of the story, its just two unhappy people stuck together. I was rooting for him until the end, where the story kind of ended abruptly, and I was at a loss to know how living like this was better than his position when it was first all out in the open, and everyone at work pitied him? How did that change?

And what about those three women? In the beginning it was only them that knew his wife brought home her lover to his romantic party. Yet the whole office knew, and he never tried to find out which one of them spilled the beans? Really? And later he takes advice from them, never knowing who ratted him out so that everyone knew his wife was playing around on him? And everyone who pitied him at work still knows he's married to the woman who cuckold him in their own house in their own bed, and he's just happy making her quit her job?

No, I really didn't want to root for this guy at the end of the story. But thanks for taking the time to write it though. It takes a lot to hang your butt out in the writing community and throw up a story for others to read.

I would liked to have heard all of the nasty facts

Why didn't the author include the whole story, especially about the affair and how it started. All of the nasty facts of the sloppy wet sex that his wife and her boss had. How she had sucked her boss off in their bedroom, and was fucked up the ass,(something she never gave to her husband), and how she had to hide the fact that her pussy was so sore that she could hardly wipe it after her and her boss finished fucking every time.

He could think back to those dates and try and remember the lies and deception that his wife was doing and see if he would have been able to tell anything if he would have paid attention to her. This could have all came out in the marriage counseling that they went to.That would have made the story complete.

Incomplete Ending and Belongs in Sci-Fi

First, I did enjoy the story up to the end. What happened to the law suit against Rick? I agree that you should use the services of a good editor. One pet peeve for me is the incredibly naive legal scenario found here. Morality clauses in employment contracts do not bind the company to enforce them (i.e. monitor behavior), but protect it from situations just like this. Moreover, just because a clerk may have knowledge of the affair does not constitute company knowledge. A company may waive provisions in its favor as it wishes. For instance, the contract may require that an employee is liable to termination if he/she misses a certain number of days per year. However, they can waive it if in their opinion it is to their benefit. (This may open them up to a lawsuit later to claims that by not enforcing it earlier the company had, in effect, nullified the provision for all employees.) Also, at best the company would have only paid nuisance value for such a claim. Furthermore, the legal system grinds very slowly, nothing gets settled in a week. Since your protagonist had already filed his case, he made it public knowledge thus negating the company's motive of secrecy for acting to quash it. Your story is a nice dream but not realistic at all. Can you imagine the number of lawsuits there would be if your legalese was correct?! I am curious why you did not pursue the option of the husband filing for divorce then being awarded the settlement as his sole property. This would have negated some of the negative consequences for the divorce. Even though these issues sometimes frustrated me, I did enjoy your story, thanks - ttom

I liked the story up until.

The point where The husband says he will accept the wife back and then goes off and does this thing where he tries to get as much money out the company as possible. I like reconciliations as much as anyone. but the only way I would even contemplate having the wife back is if she can prove to me that this was a one time thing and even then I would never trust her again. But up to that point it was a standard loving wife story. Not good, not bad, just okay. Keep writing you can and will do better.

I enjoyed it

situation as at the beginning and emotionally he is much worse off. I can not like such an ending!

Risq_001Risq_001almost 15 years ago
Ttom, just a side note

While I agree with your comment about how fast court cases take, I just did my legal and code of conduct training for my company yesterday and what you just said isn't true for all companies.

At least in my company, which is a major fortune 500 global company, 3 people didn't get fired for drinking on the job because they proved that during company picnics, a freaking "PICNIC" to show employee's appreciation by the company, because it was on company property, alcohol was served and since management knew about it they couldn't be fired for doing the same thing about a year later.

Personally I thought they should have gotten fired, but the knowledge that a few people in management knew was enough that they couldn't lose their jobs. So if a company has a morality clause to protect them from being litigant in lawsuits or named as enabling destructive behavior, suing someone for not enforcing that clause, if it exist, is a valid process. At best it gives out negative press.

See any new reports on "U.S. Sen. John Ensign" recently and his affair of a female co-worker? Guess what? Most companies don't want this level of negative press. Specially if it is a "large" company. Which leads me to point two....

Second, our company is pushing this "How" management style. In that it says that perception in the market place is more important than trying to "Manage" it yourself. In it they use the example of a woman who used her blog to post negative comments about some employee's who stole her table and threw away her lunch for a meeting. While I think its stupid "THE COMPANY" believes it to be true. Doesn't matter how I feel about it. That's what legal is pushing to all the employees, and I just did my legal compliance yesterday so yes, companies actually do believe this now. Go figure

So yes, if it is a big enough stink, I could see the companies trying to bury bad press fast. Specially lately, and that's why some of the legal stuff used here in this story seems believable to me. And if you don't believe companies are trying to prevent all the negative press they can, go look up a book called "How: A new lens" corporations seem to love this tripe =(

Hmmm

As others have said, the ending was rushed. I don't really understand why he would have wanted to stay with her...surely he could have bought his freedom with the money he received from her company.

One more thing, were they having a sale on quotation marks? You might want to employ the use of an editor next story. Like the fellow who has a problem with your and you're (which I totally understand) it is way too distracting.

Wake the fuck-up it's 2009 already. 2/3 of all the marriages out there end. Why must you pretend that the husband is just so stuck in an akward place when he finds out his wife is a whore?? It was good untill you 'pulled a Palin' at the end

By now you must have figured out, at least from the cumulative POV of most readers’ comments, what was the main problem in the story. Unfortunately, I had a similar experience with the ‘non-ending –ending’.

I liked most of the story: the very good attention grabber at the start and the good plot development. That was until the husband was listing the things he still needs to find out in order to resume normal life with his wife (somehow ‘if’ turned into ‘how’ with no explanation). On that list were just about everything you’d need to know before you close the door behind you –even with a stranger.

That’s when the real surprise of the story comes – apparently you have decided to what is called now days: “pulling a Palin” : namely, quitting the story within two paragraphs, without any answers to any of the ‘must be answered first’ questions, and in contradiction with his previous decision (a good one) not to resume normal life before he finds a satisfying answer to them.

Once posted: a story is a tacit agreement between author and readers; we read your story, assuming that you the author will provide us with your best effort at a conclusion to the plot; an ending at the end. In life, the endless actions never form a “plot”, and there is no ‘ending’ (except for one…). For that purpose we throw ourselves into reading fiction.

No Company wants publicity like this

but when he closed all accounts, that was theft, you stated his wife was working, so I assume she was being paid with contributions into at least some of these accounts. Kooky KolKore has announced his praise for Chancellor 0bama and his National Socialist party (he & H signed agreements with Russia now). Pull a Pallin, "as it is a common phrase", instead the far left keeps attacking, to try to tell any woman that they should not be on the GOP ticket of they would face attacks for the rest of their lives. Where are ht attacks on gore for not joining the 0bama govt to save the planet. I guess this would not allowed him to get richer $100 million now a billion if cap and trade goes through.

I wish I could respond to Anon's ramblings...

I like the way he handled himself, right from the 4.75 seconds. My thoughts were how long, other guys(?)stomach muscles tightening, hurt, anguish, tears from the betrayal of trust. In the end, they're working on their relationship. I would like you to have gone into the lie detector scene with the questions and answers. Obviously, the way you ended with they're working on it suggests that the relationship is still strained. Of course, he was and is a doer, a decision maker and is trying to overcome the emotional letdown of her betrayal and, there is an unwritten lack of respect when a woman goes ahead and cheats, especially when it is carefree and so wanton it is hillariously in her own home. Seems he will not be able to get the picture and reality out of his mind. I know if I were him and the woman I deeply loved came through the door half naked with a lover, I would be sick, devastated and would not be able to think straight and even though 'Boys don't Cry', I would be in pain. So, how about a sequel or next chapter going over the details of the lie detector test, the attempts to rejuvenate the relationship, the trust issues and give us an ending, huh?

I actually rather liked this story. As other people have said, the ending was a little bit abrupt, and there was no sex, but you can't have everything. Also, the legal bit seemed a bit unrealistic, but hey, its a fantasy. I would have developed the story a little by making the wife become totally submissive, willing to be just his sexual plaything, in order to keep him.

In response to the guys complaining about him not getting divorced, I have to wonder what planet they are living on. The wife almost always gets custody, so if he wants to see his kids on a daily basis, he cannot divorce. There are many many men who are still married even though they don't love (or are even attracted to) their partner any more. If I am honest with myself, if it weren't for my kids and my wife earning twice as much as I do, I would have left years ago.

This is not a good story. Many of the facts are inaccurate. (For example, polygraph tests only use 'yes' or 'no' answers.) The man did not act realistically.

And, really, you should reference Elements Of English Writing. For example, you mixed the present and past tenses.

Not a good effort.

I Liked the Story

Didn't really care about the inaccuracies. I suppose from a story standpoint, my only concern for the husband would be why does he keep her around? Clearly there is no future hope for a loving, trusting, faithful relationship with this woman She didn't break it off with her lover by quitting or reporting him to HR. She didn't try to repair her marriage.

Still, the characters, although not well-defined, rang true and the story worked.

Johnny1MJohnny1Mabout 12 years ago
I wish the author would have continued the story just a bit longer.

The question that has to be answered is why and does she want to stay married? It appears the husband would divorce, except he would end up financially screwed. So he should either divorce or make a real effort at reconciliation. That requires him to figure out if they can really save their marriage or if she's just biding her time until the next affair.

Slirpuff, I wanted to thank you for this excellent piece of fiction. A well written modern fairy tale.

As for the BTB lynch mob: Family of five have one loaf of bread. Father leaves taking half the loaf with him. Mother is left to feed herself and two children with the remaining half.

Some asshole judge, enforcing legislative mandates or voter's initiatives {that most right wing assholes conveniently forget about} says that was not a fair split of the Family's loaf of bread.

The asshole judge orders that the bread be divided into four pieces, so none of the family go hungry.

Father screams like a little bitch, that ain't fair to him, he earned it.

The Court retorts to Father: 'So YOU would have YOUR children go hungry so YOU can fill up your fat gut? YOU are willing to throw the family YOU fathered, YOU created, onto public welfare to burden taxpayers, so that YOU can eat to YOUR content?'

If you 'manly men' are incompetent to fight for your marriage, I gotta ask, why do you even bother to get married?

When an Aggressor/Predator/Enemy threatens, so many of the commentators and a number of the authors on this site choose to run away and cower instead of taking up arms against a sea of troubles.

Wasn't that the point of marriage in the first place? To defend the Wife You chose? To protect the Family You created? To nurture in a safe environment the Children You fathered?

Ahhh, you are not being respected! You poor little dears, what are you? Perpetual twelve year olds? Dribbling some sperm may define you as male but it is accepting responsibility that defines you as men.

no resolution to the problem

all parties, including the kids, are unhappy and will grow to dislike each other even more as time passes.

So, why take the cheaping bitch back?

Best final result would be to kick her cheating ass to the curve.

The last thing on his questionnaire "Do you still love me", I do not understand the point of this question. Why would it matter if she 'loves' him or not? How can you 'love' someone if you're willing to cheat on them? Even if she answers 'yes', will it make her un-fuck the boss? Will it make her more trustworthy? Will it make him forget it ever happened? And if he cannot forget, how can he ever forgive her? Their realtionship is already destroyed. Its only going to progress on a slow downward spiral of misery. The only thing worth keeping them together is the chance to provide a good enough life(as much as it can be under the circumstances) for their kids. Their lives are now going to be only a shadow of what it once was.

Too abrupt and unsatisfying.

Buy the way, in polygraph tests they only use yes/no questions.

She is USED merchandise

The marriage bed would have had to be destroyed and Lisa would never be allowed in it again. The guest room for her, perhaps. Seize the rings as they apparently meant nothing to her. Get a strong post-nup agreement. Intercourse with her? Kiss that mouth? No way ever. Keep her around to remind her she's just a used-pussy slut.

guest room ?

I can understand why he moved into the guest room, the master bedroom is now home to memories of her leading her lover in to have sex and his destroyed romance attempt.

Make her live in it.

Legal Issues Wrong

No way in hell he would have gotten $300,000 plus legal fees. All authors: try not to get carried away with your fictional legal settlements. Try to keep it real. Other than that a good story.

How many are there out there?

Who have to live in a Hell of a marriage for the sake of the kids? Some due to infidelity, others due to substance abuse, or mental defect. Of the 50% of marriages that our intact, how many of them suck? From what I see, I would estimate more than 50% of the remaining. That leaves you with a 1 in 4 chance of having a decent marriage! 25%! That's gambling and I don't like the odds!

@Sugna

People stay in unhappy marriages for many reasons! My guess it's cheaper for men to stay in an unhappy marriage than divorce!

this is what I don't get, why all the concern about money

If your a millionaire and don't have peace of mind. Then your just as poor as the broke fucker next to you. And all the bleeding hearts in the world can't change that. I looked at half of the comments here. You have Fanfare's comment, so if he takes half the loaf away the lifestyle suffers. So fucking what, who wants to eat spoiled bread, because that's all you have left is spoiled bread. DG, Ohio, Slirpuff and a few other feel that you should work it out no matter what. One of them even wrote a story about the wife cheating 3 different times. And then made a joke about her not cheating again till they were 80 something. Who fucking wants that. Is the money your going to lose, worth your peace of mind. I say no, but I also didn't give away anything. I sold, got rid of and burnt anything I couldn't get rid of before the divorce. I also spent 15 days in jail for contempt of court. And I think the only reason, I didn't spend more time was the Judge saw I was willing to get out of the military to serve the time. Hateful as it sounds, I wasn't going to give her a dime. In the long run, did it hurt my son? Yes and no, he's well adjusted but very careful when it comes to trusting women. He say first hand what I had to go through in his dealings with his mother.

Like the setup for this but it feels incomplete.

NOW I SEE!

It seems that at least SOME of you believe in "reconciliation-at-any-cost" because the cost of divorce is so high. That may be so but for myself my peace of mind is more important to me. I cannot imagine myself living in the same house with a filthy, lying, cheating slut for even 5 minutes, let alone for years going forward!

Those of you who have the stomach for it, by all means, go for it and stay with her (secretly not trusting her, arguing all the time with her, being suspicious about her, keeping tabs on her, losing sleep over her, asking friends about her goings-on,

hoping and praying that she's being faithful, etc., etc., ad infinitum.

If you can live like that, more power to you but I'm sorry, I cannot!

An answer

A one word answer to all those asking why a husband, or a wife sometimes, would stay with a cheater. Kids. Kids change the dynamics of divorce. This is especially true if the kids are very young. I know it's not the best of situations, but sometimes it's the best reason for people to live in the same house even if the marriage and the love no longer exist. Does it work every time? No. But for some people it's worth trying rather than risk tearing the kid's lives apart.

Did you get bored writing this one?

Or were you trying to end it in 4.75 seconds? You built it up to the point of the lie detector, then kinda went; "Fuck it. I'm bored with this one, here's two more tiny paragraphs to wrap up everything, now go away!"

For the Kids.

The biggest mistake couples make is staying together for the kids. It's better to cut the cord and go their mutual ways then to poison the kids lives. I've seen couples stay together for the kids' sake and have wound up with crazy kids. You can't FOOL the kids. They quickly learn that mom or dad were fucking around and are only together to appear as a normal loving family. When they really despise one another.

The quick legal settlement is implausible

Sadly, the greater the dollar amounts named in a lawsuit, the more effort you can expect on the part of the defendants to drag this out in an attempt to bankrupt you in legal fees. No way they'd cave that easily; the lawyers will tell them to keep fighting as win, lose or draw it's a few hundred bucks of revenue per lawyer per billable hour. This could drag on for a year or more with no justice done at all - especially if the underlying facts are difficult to prove with evidence.

WTF?? ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME? TAKE THIS STORY TO THE SHITHOUSE!

After he went to the trouble he did to set up a romantic evening only to see her come in anxiously ripping her clothes off so she could get fucked THEIR BED?? Who the fuck would EVER take a cunt like that back into their life?? Anyone who did would have to be the biggest and most useless wimp of all time.

AnonymousAnonymousover 8 years ago
Several mistakes in this mess

Getting her fired? Big mistake. If they divorce and she's unemployed his alimony skyrockets. Asking her questions on a lie detector (like why did she cheat?) that aren't basically "yes" or "no" answers would be totally ineffective. Screwing Rick would have been satisfying for a brief moment. He would have simply pulled up stakes, moved away and started over. No sense in paying his wife anything. How does he figure he'll "get to start fresh" with a cheating wife? That really makes no sense. Not a very well thought out story. Maybe next time?

Morality Clauses

A lot of these stories misunderstand these morality clauses.

They are to PROTECT the company, not expose them to damages. They forbid an employee from having a relationship with a subordinate thus exposing the company to a sexual harassment lawsuit. The clause would enable the company to punish the employee who was using their position of authority to obtain sexual favors from the subordinate.

The only POSSIBLE way for the company to be in any danger is if they knew about the impropriety and did nothing about it.

Proofreading

Could use some proofreading, this story has the sad distinction of being one of the shortest the author has written, while having the most errors.

Not a very full story a lot was left out. Keith should have divorced her and find someone better. She will do it again.
