"C'mon, ingrates. Let's give Madison some privacy. She's got a lot of work to do and not much time to do it."
Everyone stirred from the uncomfortable silence and started to follow Cassidy out the door while Madison choked back tears. Deva stopped next to Madison.
"You guys go on, I'll catch up," Deva called.
Cassidy waved goodbye with the vape over her shoulder and led the chastened group of hangers out the door like a pixie Pied Piper. Soon they were all gone and that left Deva and Madison in the kitchen alone. Madison turned to Deva with a helpless look, as if Deva could undo the truth of Cassidy's words, but Deva shook her head in concession.
"What are you going to do now?"
