Leila gasped with understanding and said, "But that means... what? Someone used it in the middle of the night?"
"That's about the only thing that makes sense," Maddie said grimly. "Maybe Cassie used it on me without telling us, although she'll regret it if she did."
"There's another possibility," Leila said slowly. She looked at her girlfriend guiltily and reminded her, "Back when I zapped Ruth, it said something about randomly targeting someone if no one was selected. Maybe it did that again, or something like it. An automatic response."
"God, what a nightmare that thing is," groaned Maddie, putting her head on the steering wheel. "I almost wish I'd never found it or that letter."
"What should we do?" asked Leila.
"For now, I guess we should just go and get our petplay on," Maddie said, shrugging. "Maybe tomorrow we can corral Cassie and examine the thing more closely. Including seeing if any of us has any new, unexplained traits. If not, check the neighbors, I guess."
