The less I read about what Chris thinks in these stories the better. This is why I really enjoyed reading “Too Boring” told entirely from Emily’s POV. Her slide into drug-addicted and sexual depravity, told by her as she took one willing step after another willing step was much more straightforward and powerful than the third-party narrative by her husband, with his perverted and twisted view of his wife. For him, Emily seemed no more than an object of his depraved fantasies, not a real person for whom he loves, cares about, and wants to protect. His twisted desires and his impotence serve only as a distraction from the main event: Emily’s slide into all-absorbing drugs, sex, and submission to new masters. Her journeys, if one could call her one-way trips a journey in these stories, is better told by her. In all the stories, Chris quickly becomes an afterthought for her, and eventually she has no room to think about him at all. The reader has by this point also lost interest in what he thinks and feels. Having said this, the author has written amazing stories, compelling and in many ways, frighteningly realistic.
