I am reminded of the musical movie classic, "The King and I," starring Yup Brynner. In large part, it was a story about forbidden love, though not the same type as this story. In this story, every time I read a sentence start with "Daddy and I," I can sense every emotion behind those words.

I compliment you on this simile:

"...'puff up' a little bit, like a bird trying to make himself as big as possible."
