Shaelah presented me with a bowl of stew and a flagon of mead. I took my plate to the wagon and used a chest too as a table while I ate standing up. I saw Pinkerpie eating by the fire. She was devouring her food like she was a starving wolf. Shaelah chided Mandalay for being dirty and chivvied the girl into washing her hands at least before Shaelah would give her any food. Then, at long last, Shaelah made herself a bowl, poured herself a flagon of mead, and meandered her way back to me.
We ate in silence, but she cut her eyes to me often, and when our gazes met, she always gave me a very wifely smile. The kind of smile I had come to learn said more was coming later in the evening, and I had best be ready for it!
