And a little PSA:

When researching Jean-Louis' condition for the story, I found a number of cases where seemingly healthy young people had heart attacks unexpectedly due to previously undiagnosed heart conditions. This was often while doing strenuous exercise, sometimes even after participating in similar, long-term exercise regimens. A heart attack can manifest itself as upper back pain somewhat similar to a pulled muscle in some cases. If you experience such pain without a plausible explanation as to why, please consider seeking medical help. While it may be nothing, such action may save your life.

The LAD coronary artery is called the "Widow Maker" due to it being fatal if blocked. Especially in younger men it very often is not noticed or thought to be something else. If not treated within the first few minutes it is irreversible. That is why young men experiencing it almost always die. If 911 is dialed immediately they seldom reach the patient in time. So now you have some background to supply with your next needed widow story. Great story by the way.

I haven't read the next part, but you had me wondering, what if the first Bruce were real, and yet a different person? What would the stresses (his very, very similar appearance to her deceased husband) on the relationship be, and could they get past them to be happy together? After all, he might be a long lost cousin!

Paula was a stupid bitch. Even with J-L, she was annoying and whining!!

The getting sloshed and manhunting after 7 years....she needs therapy

Very slick writing, I didn't see the "ghost" coming! I'm off to the next chapter but a quick aside. My son-in-law's father passed away a few years ago from an undiagnosed genetic condition call "brigatta". He was laying on the couch with a friend while his wife made chili on a Sunday afternoon. They thought he fell asleep watching the movie and when they went to wake him, rigor mortis had already set in. When the coroner diagnosed the cause, all the kids and cousins were tested for the defect. My son-in-law and his sister both tested positive and now have pacemakers. I can really relate to the journey Paula went through in this chapter. Good stuff! 5*

Having been where Paula was, with a wife who would never wake again, I feel that you nailed the emotions playing in Paula's heart and mind.

For once I agree with Overcritical. 5*. But what bugs me is his hypocrisy about the supernatural. He trashes others when they use it and rates their stories very low because they do, but here he’s ok with it. Go figure.

Five Stars! Great Story!

Really enjoyed this. A very good read. And hopefully Paula got her HEA at the end.

A lot of fun and good to see another version of a Christmas Carol in the competition. Good luck

Woooooo!

Overcritical gave you five stars.

That’s worth almost as much as a “W” in the contest.

Congrats.

Nice story, by the way.

I picked up on the twist with the Bruce ghost, however, the actual ending with Bruce himself caught me off guard.

Well written - I felt Paula's pain and loss throughout the story, and not being there for Jean-Louis' passing was a gut punch. But it came with a happy ending, and perhaps the chance to let the past go. You can't ask for much more for Christmas.

5*
