What total drivel. DNA testing means that yes you can know for certain Hazel is your daughter. About DNA tests, the existence of which almost every single commenter pointed out, some even politely. Okay, it would have been a better story if he had sneakily got a DNA test of the child after her birth (before the birth I imagine he'd need the cooperation of the mother) but I think we all know he wasn't the father anyway, and he preferred to live not knowing.
