Chapter Forty-Three

Mrs. Zoe Baldwin surveyed the room. She held her two dwarves wrapped up by her feet. She shifted out and thrust a fresh set of roots at the two dwarves that Hagane fought. The metallic girl was slashing and bashing.

Then she screamed out, "Lana!"

On the far side of the room, Lana Fulmine died. At the same time, Maya had run into the valkyrie in the middle of the ruined bedroom. A sword thrust into her guts and Maya screamed in pain. Mrs. Baldwin shuddered.

She couldn't reach the valkyrie, but she could bind up one of the dwarves that Hagane was fighting. The girl was hardly paying attention to them. They were striking her body while she stared up at the fairy circling the room.

"You killed her!" Hagane screamed.

Mrs. Baldwin's roots seized one of the dwarves. She yanked him off his feet and surged her tendrils over him. As she did, Hagane burst from the door, abandoning the Vault. Mrs. Baldwin's heart lurched.

"No, don't, Hagane!" she screamed.

My mother's shout turned my head. Hagane was dashing away from the Vault door. She was staring up at the ceiling. I glanced up to see the fairy twisting her wand and then she fired it straight at me. It shot down, burning the air.

I spoke the spell out of instinct. "Hard and unyielding, let the steel of Lord Nabu attack!"

I threw a bar of steel at the beam of light. It struck the light moments before hitting me. A great flash of plasma burned, burst from the steel as the fairy's beam melted my attack. Molten metal flew at the fairy while her beam of light, blunted by my spell, struck me in the face.

Pain burned across my granite flesh. My eyes sizzled. Darkness crashed down on me. I hit on my back, unable to see anything. I screamed out in pain, blinded by her attack. Panic swept over me. Dwarves shouted, their boots thudding around me.

A pickax struck my stomach.

The molten metal sprayed around the fairy. She tucked her wings in and dropped to the bed to dodge it. Hagane roared in triumph as she leaped at the bitch, her sword-arm slicing to kill her for hurting Lana Fulmine and Leo.

Hagane had never been so angry in her life.

The fairy's wings fluttered. She spun around as Hagane's arm-blade slashed at her. Screaming, the fairy surged to the right in a flurry of flapping panic. She thrust her wand out before her. Light burst from it. Not a beam, but a general blast that slammed into Hagane.

Her metallic body rang like a bell. She screamed and then fell to the bed, her metal body crashing through the mattress and breaking it worse than before. She groaned, pain ringing through her steel flesh.

The fairy laughed as she flitted free to safety.

Garnet burst out onto the top of the mountain. She stood there on the slope of shale, rocks spotted with fuzzy lichen. Below, a meadow started, flowers waving in the sunlight. Behind her, the dwarves who chased her moaned their passion for her.

"That's right, boys," Garnet said, bending over and thrusting her ass at them.

SMACK!

"Dat ass is right here!"

With a flap of her wings, she leaped from the tunnel mouth. She soared down and landed on a boulder, her demonette tail swishing behind her. She threw a look over her shoulder and smiled as the dwarves appeared. Their beards swayed down their chests, their rough faces full of lust for her. They scrambled down the slope.

"Yes, yes, come and get my cutie patootie!" she chortled and leaped again.

Like the sexiest mountain goat, Garnet the Succubus bounded down the mountain slope, leaping from rock to rock, her crimson wings flaring wide. Her black pigtails trailed behind her. The dwarves roared, rocks spilling before their feet and tumbling down after her.

She pranced and spun and laughed. She landed on the meadow, the grass whipping at her. She snatched up a red wildflower and thrust it behind her ear. The dwarves roared for her, lust maddening their wits.

She ran through the meadow, leading them farther and farther from her family.

* * / *

Darkness wreathed me. My eyes burned from the light beam of that damned fairy.

I sat up and growled, "Graven wounds pulse in pain, let the healing of Lord Dumazid flow!"

The Mend Flesh surged over my eyes. The power rushed out of my soul and then flowed back into my body. I groaned as I felt the pain retreating. My flesh regrew. The world became lights and darks. Colors formed, smeared together in a blurry pattern. My vision focused as my eyesight was restored by the Life spell.

As I regained my 20/20 vision, a burst of light exploded above. Hagane flew down onto the bed, crashing into the mattress. She groaned while the damned fairy giggled above. I shook my head and stood up.

To see an ax of ice flying right for my face.

Led had finally attacked.

* * / *

Mrs. Zoe Baldwin held tight to the three dwarves she had bound up. She fought to grow tendrils to wrap up the dwarf that slammed his pickax into the Vault door. He buried in hard and deep, struggling to break through it and get to the Void Crystal. Mrs. Baldwin couldn't let him do that. Her tendrils grew out once more.

Her forehead furrowed. Sweat burst across it. Just as she started, a voice chanted. It rose over the din of battle. Her head glanced over to see her son sitting up. The burns around his eyes retreated. The blackened holes mended. Delight surged through her that he had mended himself.

An ax of ice appeared and hurtled at her son.

The motherly instinct in her to protect her son rose. She abandoned growing her roots at the dwarf attacking the door and instead hurtled the one she had bound up. She swung him with a desperate heave, screaming as her roots snapped from the forces involved, the weight of the dwarf's body pulling on those woody strands.

He broke free and hurtled at her son. He struck a barrier of static around Leo and then struck her son. The pair fell to the side moments before the ax would have taken off his head. It hurtled past and struck the wall, bursting into shards that vanished before hitting the ground.

Leo crashed on his side, a stunned dwarf on him.

Then she turned her attention to the dwarf at the door. She had freed her tendrils. They might have snapped, the pain had shivered through her, but her toes were her roots. Sever them, and they could always regrow.

She surged them at the last dwarf. He raised his pickax and slammed it down, the door coming closer and closer to failure. She surged her vines up his body. He gasped, his head whirling to face her. Fear flashed across him. He raised his pickax over his head to throw it at her. His arms snapped forward.

She couldn't dodge. Not with the two dwarves bound by her toes lying before her squirming in her roots.

Instead, Mrs. Baldwin's roots yanked at the dwarf's legs.

Just before he threw, the dwarf arched back. His pickax flew from his hand but was thrown high. It struck the ceiling and then bounced down and crashed to the floor in a burst of sparks. It skidded into one of the bound dwarves.

"Lord Abzu's mighty cock!" the dwarf cursed. "I tried, Lord Led! I tried!"

* * / *

I thrust the unconscious dwarf off of me. I rolled to my feet, casting about. Led was here. He was trying to kill me. My gaze needed to be sharp. The fairy danced around the ceiling. Maya screamed nearby, the valkyrie's sword through her guts, freezing her.

I had to help her. "Shadows flow and darkness sharpens, let the cunning of Lord Zuen stab!"

The dagger of dark hurtled at the Valkyrie, a simple spell that would take her in the throat from her side.

"From above it falls, let the ice of Lord Anshar crush!" chanted from my left. From the corner of the room.

A chunk of ice fell from the ceiling before the valkyrie. The dark dagger struck it, burying into the ice instead of the throat of the valkyrie. Triumph surged through me. I heard where it came from. I glanced in that direction.

"Spark of lightning, crackle of electricity, let the wrath of Lord Enlil explode!" I cried.

My spell fired at the corner where Led lurked. I heard a curse and a thud of flesh. He had thrown himself to the floor. The spell struck the wall behind him in a burst of sparks. Above, the fairy shouted at me. She swung her wand before her.

I rolled to the side, my granite flesh not even feeling the impact. Her beam of light struck the ground where I stood. I gained my feet, my lips already moving as I focused on the fairy dancing above me.

"Hard and unyielding, let the steel of Lord Nabu attack!"

A bar of steel hurtled at her. She hissed and twisted to the right. It struck the ceiling, gouging out a large chunk of rock and leaving a furrow. The metal vanished a moment later. Chanting came from the corner.

Out of instinct, I cast another metal spell. "Strong and durable, let the strength of Lord Nabu shield!"

Right before me, a shield of metal appeared to protect me from an attack, while a large sheet of ice appeared before me. It didn't attack me. Instead, it caught the light in such a way that I was struck with a dazzling, bewildering gleam.

I couldn't see anything, my eyes squeezing shut from the blinding reflection.

* * / *

Maya screamed as the ice tore at her guts. She was dying. Leo was battling the fairy and Led. Maya had to stop the valkyrie herself.

Before the ice froze her.

She slid down the valkyrie's blade and thrust her hands at the beautiful, icy face. The valkyrie's free hand thrust out to grab Maya's reaching wrist. She seized the watery limb only for her fingers to sink into the undine's flesh.

Maya flowed around her enemy's grip and shoved her hands into the valkyrie's face. Water spilled over the features and poured into the valkyrie's mouth and nose. Maya would drown her. The valkyrie kneed Maya, striking one of the growing ice shards in her body.

Pain tore through Maya.

She shouted again as she forced her water to flow into valkyrie's nose and mouth. To choke off the air. They were killing each other. The ice spread through her body. The pain was so much. Who would kill the other first?

* * / *

Hagane groaned from the attack.

Fury at the fairy shuddered through her. She sat up. A wall of ice appeared to her right. Leo gasped on the other side of it. The metallic girl pushed up her fake glasses, shaking her head and clearing her thoughts. The fairy flew above her.

Out of reach.

Maya screamed.

Hagane glanced to her right. The Valkyrie turned, grappling with Maya. The undine's body had ice forming in her. She shuddered, her hands pressing on the valkyrie's face. Hagane shuddered. She pressed up. She could do something to help Maya.

Her desire to avenge Lana Fulmine ran into this other emotion. This concern for Maya. Her friend. And her lover. In this place, they were united through their passion for Leo. And Maya was in pain. Hagane rolled over and charged at the valkyrie.

"From above it falls, let the ice of Lord Anshar crush!" chanted from the corner of the room.

Hagane drew back her arm-blade to slam it through the valkyrie's back. The nerdy animated statue thrust forward when something appeared over her head. A block of ice crashed into Hagane. It slammed into her head. The weight dented her metal skull.

She staggered and collapsed on the ground, shards of ice melting around her. Hagane groaned, her vision blurring. The attack had pain throbbing through her body. Her legs spasmed. Her neck hurt. She struggled to move, but something had snapped. The chill had made her neck brittle.

It had broken. Her eyes grew heavy and...

And...

Souleen was humming to her, hugging her, and lulling her into sleep.

* * / *

The ice was like looking at the frozen surface of a lake on a sunny day. Blinding. I squeezed my eyes shut and stumbled back. The fairy laughed overhead. I dove to the right out of instinct and rolled, a beam striking the ground behind me.

I risked opening my eyes, the ice sheet to my right and no longer shining into my eyes. I groaned, a blur of blue smeared across my vision, making everything hard to see. A loud crash of ice hitting metal. I just made out Hagane hitting the ground and then her death flowed over me.

Fury surged through me. My women were dying. My other monster girls had to come so far to reach here. I knew they were getting closer. Usiku, Paanee, and Baaghi would be at the elevator by now, but it was a long ride up.

We just had to hold out a little longer.

The fairy's wings flapped above. She twirled her wand.

"The thick night falls, let the enmity of Lord Zuen smother!" I shouted before she could finish her twirl.

"The sharp gleam of ice, let the icy ax of Lord Anshar fall!" Led cried out at the same time.

As darkness engulfed the fairy in choking death, her scream bursting out of it, I struggled to see where the gleaming ax came from. The blue afterimage from the blinding sheet of ice made everything hard to see. I hesitated.

The ax struck me in the side. It hit my granite flesh where the dwarves had pickaxed me. The stone protection shattered and the ax buried into my side. Pain exploded. I gasped, blood spurting from my wound.

Cold slithered over me as the ax melted away, leaving a wound in my side gushing blood. I collapsed, the crimson spilling over my body and forming a puddle on the floor. My mother shouted in alarm.

The fairy screamed as she died overhead.

I read all of this installment instead of just a few lines.

so formulaic. it’s progressing pretty much the same way as every battle before it. and tbh it kind of makes in-universe sense for every fight to play out like this because the characters rarely do anything but fuck in between battles. shame such a great premise is going to waste like this
