Like many of your story posts this just feels like a first part, he didn't even get to the academy. Your stories would be a lot better if you spent more time on a premise rather than just spamming out dozens of different ones in a year where most of them feel incomplete.

And if you are going to place it in a fantasy setting, what about actually showing a bit of magic?

Show don't tell... except for them talking about mages, there was no actual fantasy elements in the story you wrote. It came across as lazy and pointless.
