Interesting beginning but it left so much unsaid. A first chapter should make the reader have serious interest so they are anxious to get back to the story.

The suggestions that this chapter could have done more to build anticipation for the rest of the series is absolutely valid, and I will take that on board next time.

I've got 10 chapters planned for this series in total, all of a similar length to this one. I'm aware that they're fairly short chapters, but it was an intentional decision to prefer short chapters that explore one concept each, rather than to arbitrarily group them together to hit a specific word count.
