I’ve experienced this nightmarish injury with a family member who suffered a brain bleed. Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately) not long after the injury, he suffered a post surgery stroke, and died. Like the Adam Sandler/Drew Barrymore movie “50 First Dates”, only without the romcom. BTW, both my kids were born at Rose Hospital down off 8th and Colorado Blvd. - small world, huh? Another interesting and original story - thanks.
Your story reminded me of the movie "50 First dates" with Adam Sandler. Good movie and yours is a good story.
A true Ride or Dead.
Thank you for the share, author.
Sad tale but awesome. few men or women would stay in a horrible situation even with a loving mate. thank you
Crisp, clean, elegant... Excellent 5*
And I am reluctant to give such short pieces high marks. They usually lack sufficient character development and avoid dealing with important issues.
This piece had no such problems.
The epilog was truly awesome.
It's good to read a story about true love and devotion on this site. After working with dementia patients, I realized it takes a very special, very loving and devoted spouse to care for them. The heartbreak and obstacles they face are overwhelming yet each day they rise to the occasion. I hope there is a special place for them in the afterlife where they are rewarded for their selflessness.
Loved it, like your tags said, Loving Wife/Loving Husband. Thanks for the story 5's
An amazing wife he needs to be in a long term care facility
had me going at first then "Groundhog Day" visions appeared and I got it. Good tale.
I have been writing my memories down as fast as crazy for the last few weeks in notebooks. My always sharp mind and memory seems to be leaving me from time to time and I fear the testing coming up in a few weeks.
I just watched my father degrade during the last few years and leave us last week. During his few times of clarity, I remember that look he gave me silently begging for mercy. Mercy I wanted to grant him but mercy I couldn't give him. After 4 tours in the Middle East and other "Contract Work", I don't have anything left of my Soul to be able to do it.
I do know one thing, I will NEVER allow myself to get to that point.
This started as a routine LW story and turned into something much deeper. Boyd's right. This is a romance, but it's posted in the right place.
Beautiful, heartwrenching love story so skillfully crafted. Did not see the hook coming. You always surprise and deliver! Bravo again! Always worth the wait (say your impatient fans everywhere 😉) Please keep them coming!!
who believes in vows and gives proof by living them to the utmost. TK U MLJ LV NV
Well written, so much packed into so few words. I usually don’t like flash stories because they rarely have significant substance to them, this was different and brought out strong emotions in me.
Starts off feeling like a pair of cheaters , but they are just cheating time and scirnce. Sort of a different groundhogs day. A special one.
Thank you for your writing. I enjoy your work

one of the best I ever read here? Easily; the end - I didn't see that coming. Not even a clue.
That was excellent. It deserves a much better rating. I look forward to your next story.
Thank you, sir. Soooooo refreshing and pure. Clean writing.... honest emotions and true devotion. Touched me to feel the power of a spouse that said her vows and imprinted them on her heart a d lived them and cherished them. Gene wasn't lucky in his accident but most assuredly fortunate in his love. Thank you for this... perhaps one of the truest wifelovers stories I've ever read
...whose father had the same problem. He had long term memories, but no short term memories. It was difficult, but I don't think it was this difficult. Excellent and very original story told very well! Easily 5*****
I am unable to find the words to express my overwhelming admiration for this work.
After reading so much dross on this site lately, it is truly a breath of fresh air!
Great story! Very refreshing to see a story where the spouse means their vows. 👍👍
Doesn't remember old stuff, and doesn't remember new stuff. He doesn't remember his wife or children, but he remembers to always go to the same bar, and he remembers to take his phone with him. He also remembers the LW stories he read, at least, the impression they left on him.
Had something similar happen with a family member who had an accident and his short term memory got really bad. He kept asking me how come his wife wasn't visiting him at all, when in fact the poor woman was there 23 hours a day, and would step out a few minutes when I came around to give her a break.
Interestingly, while in the hospital his interest in women never went away. He kept on putting on music videos, on the tv in his hospital room, to watch the scantily dressed women, and would comment about the nurses. His personality never changed, but his mind was never the same.
I got suspicious when Gene wasn't mentioned
the morning after.
I actually though he was a ghost.
His own or hers.
This was better.
Great idea and well played.
Top ratings from me.
Nothing more to say -- you nailed it, eyes watering a little after I was done. You told a better story in 1 page that most he have done in 5 .... ***** all the way.
You took me to a place that I wasn't expecting to go. One of your many great ones, and maybe the best.
Worthy of imitation. Terse prose. Tightly unfolded. Thought-provoking.
What more is there?
I liked your story, I can kind of relate to it. I, had, a brother who suffered from alzheimer disease this reminded me of that.
A true loving wife, that is devotion/love/compassion all rolled into one flash tale that transcends them all.
Thank you for sharing this.
5/5
Now this was a short story with style and real class! Not a word more than was necessary - brilliant.
I read it, read it again, and then had to sit and think about it and all the ramifications of it for a long while. That takes some doing. You have some real talent there.
Thank you, sir/ma'am. 5*
... that this wasn't ten pages! It would have been just too hard to deal with emotionally.
.... That this was so good.
.... That this was so well done.
Thank you.
One of the scariest books I ever read was "The Man Who Mistook His Wife For A Hat" by Oliver Sacks. If you want to be frightened by the things that can go wrong with your brain, read it.
My daughter had a very severe brain injury from which she has now recovered. For a very long time,, she insisted that she was a freshman in high school - she had recently graduated from college when she was injured. She would get extremely disturbed and angry if anyone told her she was wrong. Thank God - one day she woke up and began talking about her life. She finally remembered, but the last six months or so before the accident gone forever.
Such a different story, and I loved it. We found a true Loving Wife. Five Stars.
It was a sad, but wonderful story of what a true partner will do. Too many times people commit and then bail when things get tough. Accidents, Medical Issues, diseases are not something you can plan for. You do the best you can and hope for the best. Unfortunately sometimes you get the worst.
5* Sad but Sweet. More money needs to be spent on Traumatic Brain Injuries! In Good Health and Bad Health till death do us part...Kewlness!!!!
A refreshing story about love and commitment instead of infidelity.
Being the one cared for by a loving wife, I'm just glad I can still remember. She doesn't have that burden as well.
Loved to see the development here. Short but very sweet. Sorry I could only give it a 5, I think it deserved better!
Very loyal and loving, but also very sad. Is he mentally competent to operate on his own? Maybe the wife should try the thing with the DVD as in 50 first dates. If he is competent to be on his own then maybe the wife can recreate the relationship as a new person in his life. If he is not competent than sooner or later she will have to get professional intervention.
Of course you just wanted a short story with an interesting plot, and you did that.
Thanks for the effort.
You did a really good job disguising the ending. Some hints, but the hints could have meant almost anything. Great Job! 5*
I for one never saw it coming. I would hope that they find a better way to care for Gene's condition. Given the cuckold bullshit that's normally on this site, it's a pleasant surprise to find an actual loving wife story. The daughters a bit of a mystery though. Hasn't she learned anything about love and devotion from her parents life? How could she possibly question her mother about giving up on her father?
An actual loving wife story. I enjoyed it and I much prefer these stories to the majority you find in this category. Thank you.
My wife has Alzheimer's. Everyone I know, friends, my family, her family has tried at one time or another to convince me to put her away in a facility. Since I was only 53 when she was diagnosed, they wanted me to be able to continue to live my life. 6 years later I'm still taking care of her. She has been bedridden for the past 19 months. Can barely speak. Understands very little. She doesn't recognize anyone but me. And her face lights up every time she sees me, which is many times every day. About the only thing she can say is, "I love you." I get kisses everyday from her. Putting her somewhere was never a possiblity for me and I wouldn't have done it any differently.
I'd add a pithy comment or two but those before have said it all concerning this great little story.

I'm crying. My memory is slipping. My wife of 45 years remembers everything.
The final line of the story says it all!
This is one GREAT story!

Wow! 5 stars all day long! So much power and emotion in such a short story. My hat's off to meandmore, great work.
I don’t want many of the stories to be like this, but wow, just wow! Thanks.
Love this... reminded me of that drew barrymore adam sandler movie 50 first dates
An original short story by an adept author. Moreandmore was very clever in placing this in the Loving Wives category rather than Romance. First because it was about a loving wife in the best sense and second because it put a mindset in Loving Wives story fans that set up the surprise ending.
Well played M&M!
A powerful message of love packed into a very tidy unique wrapping. It’s not unexpected but still surprisingly good.
Your stories are always crafted with a message for those paying attention. Thank you for your story!
By what stories that is found on Literotica. It's awful hard to write a book if the same could be said in such a few words. Great story.
