I know you're not ready for that to happen, at least not yet.

Thank you for another excellent chapter, and I look forward to the next.

When I thought about Leeds punishment, I just imagined mike and others smacking him around. But what you wrote was way way worse, it made me think of some of punishments the greek gods came up with..

Yep. Beautiful bit of epilogue for the one trying to walk the path of redemption. Being able to truly repent has a deep meaning, especially with life, souls and magic involved. The owl may not have been able to live long enough to make up for the life she previously lead, but in her final months/ years and more significantly her choices, she was able to use her death to do some good. Mike's magic loves him, and would do anything he asked of it, but like him, his magic is young and inexperienced. He needs some real training now that it is manifesting so clearly now. And what do you know, there also happens to be another human with new magic needing a teacher as well. This might finally get the two of them to sit with each other and figure out themselves a bit too. xD

-- It was little Emery with the secret, not Dana- she could only smell it. Good for you little guy. Nice to keep some powerhouses back with the cabin, for a number of reasons. Its not a JRPG party limit system, its more like Risk (that analogy brings a chuckle). But Mike's world is large and divergent, so in this game being played, some pieces have to be positioned to guard the flanks.

-- Also, just had a flash of insight as I was typing this, but Velvet isn't the first girl he knocked up, that would be Sweetpea if I recall correctly. Although, when it comes to "firstborn" one does wonder which would magic choose, since one I think was set to take 5 decades and the other is yet to hatch. I only think to extend the thought because of the tropes around that- maybe it means nothing, maybe it does. Time will tell if it becomes important ^.^

-- Anywhose, thank you again for another magnificent chapter. However this book ends of getting wrapped up, I'm compelled so say I'm a bit spooked for the next one. Mike hasn't really been able to Do things before this chapter, not really. He just relied on being a good fellow and leaning on the resources at his disposal. Now though... Well, now he's not just an underdog making weird plays- he's out of the minor leagues. You and yours Be well. Catharsis to you and those pieces inside that have been pushed passed their breaking points. I would hope you have your own white harts and foxes offering you advice and support a little closer to home- but I can tell you that you for sure there are smiling faces from afar that would see you succeed.

I like the resolution here, so please tell me Leeds is really down for good.... if he gets out and causes more mayhem, the whole thing's gonna feel too pointless.

Also... with Velvet dead, does Mike still have the arachne-like senses and the ability to hear the spiders and stuff?

I love the story and appreciate the author's talent. I also disagree with the anon who wants to see the story cancelled because of the lack of sex. BUT I do agree that the lack of fun sex between the gals and Mike has stalled the fun flow of the series. To call it "Story driven erotica" is......generous. These last many, many chapters the fun erotica has been pushed to the back burner in favor of grand battles. I know there have been many fans writing in saying that they don't care that there's less sex they would call "forced", "pointless" or "gratuitous", but sex scenes don't have to be those, either. But waiting chapter after chapter for some fun romantic times based ONLY on whether it "advances the plotline" has turned this from erotica into action/adventure. Lots of sex CAN advance the plotline. Case in point, this chapter. Amazingly written and I loved reading it. But can it be summarized by: "big battle where they beat up Leeds"? Well, yes. I want to see this story continue forever! The parts that drew me, and I suspect, many of us in were parts where Mike got wrapped up (physically, haaa) with the gals he loves. More, please Miss Annabelle!! 5 stars

I always find it such a big joke, they kill and kill and kill lots of creatures, but then when the big bad is about to be killed they say they become bad when they kill him. I wonder what's the difference between killing hundreds of nirumbi's vs 1 evil demon? And in the next story that thing escapes and kills a lot more people.

A little bit similar stupid as Batman never killing the joker, and the joker escaping over and over and killing lots of people every time.

Wouldn't the world not be a better place when we removed that evil?

AnonymousAnonymousover 2 years ago

Big sigh of relief. For a bit there I was afraid Mike was going the route of Daenerys Targaryen. I think he represents the core of who you are, of which one aspect is violence as a last resort, and sometimes not even then. He is the epitome of what any world religion, worthy of consideration, teaches — self-sacrificial love. That is what a caretaker does, concern herself with the well-being of others.

Thank you for such a wonderful gift — this story you are telling. It is a treasure.

AnonymousAnonymousover 2 years ago

As an addendum to my prior post about the nature of a caretaker, it appears some on here don’t know the difference between killing to save the lives of those you love, as well as your own, and killing for the sake of revenge alone. Killing to make you feel better.

AnonymousAnonymousover 2 years ago

A very good chapter.

Had to minus a star for the fact that along the way they seem to have killed 8,348,284 Nirumbi, plus various other creatures, but when Mike is confronted with killing Leeds, a dude with LITERALLY the word 'Devil' in his name, and NOW it is a bridge too far? Um, nope. It wasn't all in self-defense. That is a logic fail, sorry.

Worse still will be if Leeds 'escapes' and does ANY more harm to ANYBODY. Because that was all very preventable from this point on. Those deaths are on Mike.

Other than that, solid. Great world building talking about the Forest and the magic and it deciding Mike was worthy (and necessary).

Was not (at all) heart-broken like others about Velvet, but now we have this egg saga nonsense taking up oxygen. (I wonder how many of us anti-spider people are even left? Can Annabelle track lost audience from her side? Huh...) I'm sure it will find its way to the sister and it will magically "make her want to be a mom!" so she too can get knocked up by Mike. But hey, it is the author's story. I just hope that happens after this book ends, so when it does, I can cut out like so many others.

Don't get me wrong, this has been an amazing run, and the no-sex thing is almost not even a thing for this story anymore. (Thousands of other stories for getting the jollies, folks, relax or just go elsewhere. This is a climax of a different kind coming up.)

I just have ZERO interest in bug-human sex. Didn't like it with the little color bugs that didn't even have a name at first. It is creepy.

Now we see Abella relegated to life on the farm?

How much you want to bet that Eulalie plays a BIG part in the finale? Then as an epilogue the dumbness with the egg and her and Mike 'make a little family'...yay!

Annnnnddd, I'm out.

AnonymousAnonymousover 2 years ago

I disagree with the spider-hate from previous commenter. Velvet and Eulalie and NOT bugs.....they're strong, capable females. Previous commenter called that kind of sex "creepy". Ummm....creepier than being with a 3 headed dog or goblin or snake woman? This is about sexy fantasy and like in life, there are a lot of different preferences out there, why not celebrate them all??

Finally!

I really liked the depiction of grief in this chapter, it really shows how much Mike has grown as a character since book one, where he would have probably killed Leeds after his acts.

Also, it was so relieving when Velvet's egg showed up - and in Emery's coin stash of all places. I nearly teared up when Emery told Abella not to crush it, really made me tear up.

Btw, still hoping for Beth and Bigfoot to have a little meet-up ... or rather a big meet-up. Until then, I am curious how Mike will save the day or rather the worlds with his new wound (which I think will come in handy very soon, just saying a decolored arm sounds much like a superhero's secret weapon than a wound).

Thanks for sharing this tale, and especially the last chapters. Five stars!

Excellent so far, I was a bit saddened by Velvet's death but understood the why. By the way I hope you're not distressed by the whiny readers who claim they'll stop reading the story, personally I say good riddance to the lot of them. If they can't enjoy a good story, then they should give reading altogether.

Keep up the good work! I'm very curious to see how this ends!

Will Emery get his silver replaced, will he hatch the egg and help bring up Velvet and Mike's child, will their daughter have silver armour? Will she be able to defeat the werwolf? Oh, am I jumping too far ahead? Will, will, will...... So many questions!

Another blinding installment. Keep it up Annabelle. From the first chapter I have been hooked and can't wait for the next.

I've managed to stay behind your writing schedule so that over the holidays I've got plenty of your work to read. But it's hard not to read it all in one sitting. Thank-you

Just read the Anonymous comments below. Not that I agree with the comments made but I respect the individuals right to their opinion. If you don't like it, don't continue to read?

The story for me is no longer about sexy couplings between x and y. It has taken on a life of its own. I have engaged with each and every character in my own way, From Mike to Leeds. Each has their own place and roles to play. Without a "baddie" there can be no "goodie".

I honestly, from the character development cannot see Eulalie getting it on with Mike? It would just be out of character. But I can see her being involved with the daughter of her sister. It just rings so true with reality.

But I'll bet even though you say your out Anonymous, you will secretly sneak back in to have a look to see what happens? Even if it's just to see what people are commenting about your feedback!

AnonymousAnonymousover 2 years ago

Very good chapter...

A lot of what I would say is previously covered...

One thing I noticed is that the pro- and anti-spider groups have interestingly different takes.

One side thinks the spiders are 'creepy', the other side thinks they are 'sexy'.

Both opinions, to me, are fine.

Where it gets interesting to me is that there is so much hostility towards the anti-spider readers.

This is art...we don't all agree.

I have been reading this from the beginning (I literally had to 'catch up' all the way to chapter 2).

I think it is great that Annabelle has such dedicated fanatics amongst her readers. Only...

This is art, and we don't all have to agree.

If a gym rope hanging from a ceiling in a museum can be 'art' (let alone Jackson Pollock), then clearly not all art is for everyone. Blaming people for what they like or don't is like telling them they are wrong about the food they like or they are fools to only want men over 6 feet tall with dark hair and dark eyes (or a enormous penis). We like what we like, and the converse.

I don't recall (I may have forgotten, it's been a while) those that didn't like spiders saying nobody should read the book, that everybody else should send Annabelle hate mail over it, or that anybody should be punished for enjoying the spider women storylines.

They expressed THEIR opinions. THEY found it creepy.

The people saying those that stop reading are 'whiny' or that everybody should celebrate 'all' of the 'preferences' are missing the point. As they try to allude to the real-world LGBTQ+ community, I can assure you that those at the forefront of equality thinking realize that the battle isn't for everybody to 'like' everything, to 'celebrate' everything on a given spectrum.

It is for people to have equal access and ability to be who they are when it doesn't hurt others. Acceptance, not forced compliance. Let me like what I like, and I let you like what you like, and we don't have to agree that all of it is great, just that all of it should have the option to be for everyone.

So what people want to read about is entirely their business. If they want to 'self-deport', that is fine. Not everybody likes hair metal...to me, that is reasonable...to you that may be insane, how can anybody NOT love them some over-sexualized men dressed as women (at least originally) who then treat women as objects for their own appetites? Crazy, right? Like jazz, don't like jazz...maybe like the club the jazz is in, the atmosphere, the drinks, the people, the decor...but not the actual jazz so much. Should you be mocked and derided?

I, personally, didn't care that much either way. Not my favorite characters at all (Lily, Abella, Tink, original Beth, and of course, Death), but I didn't need them to die off to enjoy the story either. Every work of art takes the risk that it won't be liked/loved/enjoyed by everyone. That isn't even the point of all (or maybe even most) art. It helps, obviously, and the artist surely is encouraged by that, but if that is the only motivating factor for creating it or for the person taking it in, both are likely to be disappointed.

New readers are going to be picking up this work for years, decades to come. The world-building alone, minus the sex or character interactions, is magnificent. Go try to build a mythos sometime, see how that goes for you. Then add on a few hundred thousand words...see if you have some highs and lows, some erratic moments. Develop a myriad of characters, each with their own backstory. Then add a sexual component. Good luck.

Not everybody is going to love it, or do so all the way through. That doesn't mean their feedback (however given) isn't valuable to the writer. We learn best through failure...and for many a writer, one lost reader is a 'failure' of sorts, every bad review, or criticism, is a type of failure.

Go write a novel, or even a pamphlet, that everybody in your echo chamber tells you is perfect.

They might be your fanatics, but they aren't the best audience, and you won't really grow or improve as a writer, I can assure you.

Fans encourage a writer, but (honest) critics mold a writer.

I want to start off by saying I am a big fan, you have been doing a fantastic job with the series and I have read each and every one of them. All said and done there was something in this chapter, that really disappointed me - the fact that you, weather instinctively or completely intentionally, weaved in the "heroic" morals we get shoved down our throats from pretty much every movie out there that has a good guy and a bad guy. No matter what attrocities the bad guy commits, he has to be spared by the "hero" of the story. I call bullshit on that. Leeds deserved the annihilation, I got excited that for one moment Mike finally knew what the hell he was doing with magic, being able to understand it finally, and then I read the same, albeit peraphrased clichees... He has to be better than him, passing final judgment will forever change him, yada yada. This is my one and only disappoitment if the series, I honestly believed you could do better than repeating that specific "morals" clichee.

HoubovyJazykHoubovyJazykalmost 2 years ago

To the last anon. I think it’s different from the traditional heroic Morals in that it’s more about his internal line not so much morals. Personally annihilating someone face to face with rage and intent does hurt your psyche. And they’re not exactly letting Leeds off the hook; animals are taking chunks out of him trees are walloping him. And it sounds like they’re absolutely going to be rough with him while he’s locked up. They’re gonna make him pay, it’s just how they go about it.

LevindlLevindlalmost 2 years ago

To the Anon below that is calling bullshit that Mike did not kill him for ethical reasons, obviously you have never been a real soldier or put in a situation of this sort.

Having been a career soldier in a counterterrorism undercover unit in the IDF, I had a brother in arms that was with me for several years killed 2 feet away from me by a terrorist that shot him in the head. I was so filled with range that I and and shot him in the chest and ran towards him to see if he was dead. When I saw that he was not, I lifted my weapon to shoot him again, and froze because I knew that he could have vital information about the terrorist cell that we were after. I had a choice between getting my vengeance or possibly getting information that he may or may not have had, and realized that my job is not to be judge jury and executioner.

With tears in my eyes, I patched this asshole up and extricated him back to our base to hand him over first to the field hospital and then Sue the intelligence unit to find out what they could from him.

My other brothers in arms would have had no issue if I would have blown him away, and understood my need for vengeance but still understood even more my ability to put that aside for the morality of not killing him.

You may call it bullshit, but Annabelle although I believe that she has never been a soldier in the field of battle has grasped A concept that obviously you are incapable of ever understanding.

Next time, don’t be a coward by hiding behind “Anonymous” When you don’t have the balls to put your name in there, if you are going to criticize someone for their amazing writing!

Epic.

There was a lot to unpack here, from the changed dynamic of Mike unleashing his rage in new and terrifying ways(clever analogy of the pruned branch), only brought back from the brink by his family.

The fallout from love and tragic loss was stunning, with Emery himself, the greatest hero that ever was, coming through to save the life of a child.

I can not put into anything resembling coherent words how relieved I was to find that the egg survived.

In a perverse way, I thought that before the child of Velvet's vision came about, there was a chance she might live.

For a brief, terrifying while, I thought we'd lost them both.

Now I can be excited to eventually meet Mike and Velvet's daughter, her legacy!
