She hated walking around her apartment at night without something on; a T-shirt, panties, shorts, sweats, anything. Whether it was modesty (although she looked pretty darn fine - well okay), or merely paranoia (the proverbial ax-murderer wasn't getting any cheap thrills when he busted in), she didn't know. Besides, she knew full well that her neighbor across the way, on the opposite side of the building, had an all-access view into her living room.
She knew because "Mr. Slippery" -- she called him that because his hair-grease used to maintain his comb over made him look like a damaged bird from the Exxon Valdez disaster - told her himself. He came right out and said to her, in the elevator one day, "I can see into your window, ya know...you're a night owl, like me." She wondered if he would've said that if she were married, or clearly, actively involved. Fucking pervert. He'd sit at his kitchen table, Mr. Slippery, at his oilcloth-covered table, pretending to read, black half-glasses sliding down his nose. But at night, when she'd stroll around her living room, in T-shirt and shorts, panties, pretending to pick up the clutter of magazines, books and newspapers, she'd glance over to his window, and spy him peering over, his eyes definitely veering away from his newspaper. Her dance tapes she'd always do in the morning, sweaty and sports-bra clad, on the days she didn't feel like hitting the gym. Mr. Slippery hung out with the old men downstairs on the block by the park, around that time of morning, picking up egg sandwiches and coffee and sitting on the park bench with the rest of them. It was a gauntlet of elderly men that she had to run on her way to work; nodding at them, dressed in her modest suits, they sometimes nodded back. Better yet, they would be involved in some intense discussion over something in the Daily Post or the Racing Form and would ignore her entirely.
Tonight she just wanted to kick up her legs on the sofa and watch a movie. But, instead, an idea caught hold of her. Maybe it was the full moon. Maybe it was all that bending down in her tight t-shirt, or her recent lack of social activity with anyone, of any gender. Perhaps, she'd been spending too much time alone, behind the computer, in front of the TV. For whatever reason, she realized that, alone or not, she'd never really, except for hastily getting showered in the morning or under the blankets getting laid, she'd never been really and truly naked in her own apartment.
Fuck Mr. Slippery. If he wanted a show, he was going to get one.
Before she started, she ran to the bedroom and put a sweatshirt and yoga pants on the arm of the sofa, ax-murderer insurance, by the time he'd gotten through the locks she'd be dressed, naturally. Then she turned out all the lights, except for the TV, and put in the porn tape that Mr. Artsy (great body, talented painter, lousy lay) had left her. She wondered if Mr. Slippery could see what was on the TV, but imagined it was the wrong angle.
Standing on her woven Pier 1 rug, she slowly pulled her black T-shirt over her head, leaving her in her bra and panties. And sneakers, she realized (having broken a glass in the kitchen last week, she was still being cautious). Fuck it; the sneakers can go, kicking them off without untying them. Who was this crazy chick? She smiled to herself.
She stretched, her arms almost long enough to touch her low-cinderblock ceiling, up on tiptoes. She ran her hands down her front, feeling her body's curves that she'd washed and dressed and hidden a thousand times before. What did other people see? What did Mr. Slippery see? She didn't dare look, but she could see his kitchen light on, from the corner of her eye. What had Mr. Artsy seen, when he made love to her, when supposedly loved her? He'd told her once, that he liked it better when she "kept her top on," hiding her full breasts and soft belly. Unsurprisingly, his new girl was flat-chested with an ass you could land a plane on. She wasn't bitter, just honest. But she wasn't thinking about Mr. Artsy. This was about her. Her body, her stunningly imperfect body, naked yet on display.
Her hands shook as she unclipped her bra. When was the last time someone had done that for her? Slowly...one, two, three.....letting her breasts fall forward, holding them, like rare objects d'art, museum pieces - staring at them as if they didn't belong to her. Smooth, full, and soft, she was surprised how lovely they were. She crossed her arms not to hide them, finally, but just to hold them close. Her pinkish, stiffening nipples grew each time she moved, her arms grazing them quietly, her hands passing over them.
Her panties, cut high on the leg and her favorite shade of black, were almost an afterthought as she gazed out the window, taking in the thousand open windows in the city laid out before her. Stepping out of her panties, slowly, one leg at a time, holding onto her armchair, she wondered who else was noticing the wonderful, free body that was hers to display. She was Getting Naked in Her House! Come on, Ax Murderers! Look up from the Post, Mr. Slippery!
There she was, her excitement growing, her pride and admiration for herself growing within even as her cheeks flushed pink. She leaned over to open the window, feeling the cool fall breeze on her breast, ass, pussy, arms and legs.
Free, vulnerable, alone and awkwardly ecstatic. She pushed back her hair, tousled from pulling off her shirt. She didn't know where to put her arms, didn't know how to stand. How do naked people stand when they're not doing something to get themselves clean, or not naked, or laid? She was breathing hard.
She looked out the window at Mr. Slippery and made eye contact for the first time. Her mouth opened. He smiled broadly, his craggy face grinning ear to ear. Slowly he got up from his seat, turned away, and shut the kitchen light.
She remained motionless for an instant. Slowly, she began to smile. She leaned out the window, letting the wind make her hair crazy, and her nipples hard.
She grinned and laughed and held herself tight and felt the wind blow over her some more. She turned around, back to the window, mooned the neighborhood, and laughed like crazy. She yelled and waved to the passersby on the street, who whooped and hollered back at her.
It was two AM before she got into bed. She slept with the feel of the blankets everywhere, and drifted off, satisfied. And nude. Naked. Whatever.
