Loved this story. As an amateur historian, I find that the American revolution is often glamorized to the American point of view. I had read a statement that only 10% of the population of the colonies at the time were actively engaged in the war of Independence. The other 90% were just trying to survive. Atrocities and cruelty was done by both sides. The point of view in your story shows a different prospective of most story's of that time. Well done.
