Click here"Are you Maria?" he asked timidly.
"Uh yea." she said cautiously. "Who are you?"
"This is for you," the boy said handing her a card size envelope.
"Who's it from?" Maria asked confused.
"Some guy," was all the boy said, before he turned and ran into the crowd.
Maria tried to keep an eye on him but eventually lost sight of the kid in the sea of people still milling around the campus. Instead she turned to look at the white envelope which simply had her name on it. She held her breath as she ripped the seal and took out the card that simply said Congratulations on the front. Inside there was no gift card or cash. Just a sloppily scrawled personal message. She began to read it as her jaw dropped.
Dear Maria
I wanted to tell you how proud I am of you. You grew up in basically the same shit I did but you refused to give in. I'm so sorry what I put you through that night. You didn't deserve any of it. With the toughness you showed Los and the others I know you will be able to take on anything you face in your life.
Love
Your brother Juan
A tear dripped from her face onto the card and smudged the ink. Maria wiped her eyes and scanned the crowd one more time before putting the card back into the envelope.
"Is everything ok?" Maria's mother asked noticing the tear tracks on her daughter's face.
"Yea Mom," Maria answered back giving her mother a hug. "Everything's great. Let's go home."
