Chapter 13 Dinner Party and Visit to Rehab

Saturday -- Week Four:

I woke up a little later this morning figuring I'd spend the day at home to get some chores done and spend a little time playing with Sam. I had Skyped with the girls for about 20 minutes last night when they got home and told them if they wanted to bring their extra clothes and work uniforms with them when they came that they could spend the night after we got back from the dinner party.

After breakfast Sam and I loaded up in the Defender to go check on the cows and calves. Lance had finally agreed with me on getting out of the cattle business and going to strictly grain. The bull had been sold off last week and we had a stock truck coming Monday to sell off the steers and heifers without calves or expecting that were market ready. As soon as all of the calves have been delivered and weaned the remaining heifers would be sold off and we would only be left with the calves to be raised until finished.

I got finished checking on the cows and had found two more newborn calves leaving three more to go.

I headed back to the shed putting up the Defender and throwing the stuff in the outside washer to clean up from the newborns. Called Lance to let him know we had two more calves. Got out the mower to cut the grass around the farm and house before taking it to Lance's to cut theirs.

Getting to their house just before lunch, they invited me in for a sandwich and drink. We sat and talked about the upcoming harvest and the cattle to load on Monday morning. Lance said he was going to go load the last load of grain up so he could run it to the terminal on Monday after the cattle were loaded.

Returning home I took a little time to play frisbee with Sam before going in and getting cleaned up for the dinner party. I had a couple of hours before the girls would get here to get ready to leave so I spent some time working on a couple of design ideas I had that I thought might be patent-able.

The girls had left DQ as soon as they got clocked out and had gotten here in the 4 Runner with about 40 minutes to spare before we had to leave for the Temple's.

As soon as they were dressed and ready we got in the 4 Runner and left for Metropolis.

We talked about their day and mine on the way.

Kenz said, "Sally asked us to work the three till closing shift Monday thru Thursday next week and if we did then she would let Thursday be our last day. We asked if we could think about it and let her know tomorrow when we come in to work. What are you thoughts on it Scott?"

"Well if you two want to do that for a couple of days break before you start classes, I think you might like that." I said.

"That would allow us to go to Rend Lake sometime on Friday after I got back from Warhammer." I continued.

"Um, what about your class reunion?" Kala asked.

"Damn, forgot about that. That is Friday night and we need to go. OK, first thing Saturday for heading for the lake then."

"Sweet. I'll text her to let her know." Kala said picking up her phone.

They spent the next 40 minutes texting with a friend or two and messing on their phones.

We pulled in to George and Madge's place and I recognized a couple of plates from Wayne county.

"Wow!" exclaimed Kenz.

"Yeah, Wow!" followed Kala.

"Yeah, George said he made a mint when he sold his business."

Nice concrete circle drive, two story stone house with a large attached garage that I could see as I pulled up and parked behind a Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster parked behind a Mercedes AMG GLE COUPE.

"Whoa!" exclaimed both girls at the same time.

"Nice Mercedes cars." from Kenz.

"No shit!" from Kala.

"Um, girls, lets try and keep our off color comments to ourselves until we see how the rest of the guests present themselves. I know it will be tough for me as well, but let's try and make a good first impression."

We got out and went up to the front door and I rang the doorbell.

The front door opened quickly and there stood an Air Force captain in dress blues.

I held out my hand to shake hers and introduced myself and the girls.

"Captain James, I'm Scott Stevens and this is Makenz and Makala Jones." directing her to each girl respectively as I read her name tag.

"Pleased to meet you." shaking my hand and then each girl in turn.

Kala had on a nice green dress with matching sandals and Kenz had a striking little black dress and matching pumps.

"I'm certainly glad that you two are not dressed alike so I can tell you apart. Please call me Kelly." She responded.

"Well Kelly, I certainly wasn't expecting to run into someone in the military tonight." I said.

Chuckling, "I'm a last minute addition to the guest list. I got a last minute leave for the weekend and didn't have anything to do so I drove over from Scott Air Force Base to visit my aunt and uncle. I just happened to have a set of my dress blues with me. You were quick to recognize my rank. Were you in the military?"

"No, I work, er worked at Warhammer Engineering but am doing other things now. We designed some sensors and other systems for the military and some of it is on Air Force planes."

"So your the lucky guy that they told me about a bit ago."

Blushing, "Yeah, I guess I am."

"I'm somewhat familiar with Warhammer. I fly the stratotanker and one of the new sensors on the refueling boom was designed by Warhammer. You wouldn't have been on the design team were you?"

"Um, yeah," blushing, "that was the project before my last one. I designed the latching interface and mounting for the sensor."

"Nice! Our hookup failures to the fighters and helos have reduced about 80% since those were installed. Awesome job."

My face felt like it was on fire as I'm sure I turned bright red only to be confirmed by Kala.

"WOW! Scott, I've not see your face that shade before." causing Kenz and Kelly to both break up laughing.

About that time George walked up.

"What's all the commotion about?" looking at his niece.

"Hey Paps. I just met one of the designers of the new refueling sensor that I was telling you about that we are using now. Scott here was one of the designers."

"So, you are an inanimate interface expert as well? Interesting."

The comment was not lost on Kelly. "Paps told me that someone would be here tonight with two girlfriends." With a smirk.

With Kelly's comment, the girls caught on to the referral and their faces both turned as red as mine had to be.

I cleared my throat and croaked out, "Ahem, w...well I'm not the only one that's embarrassed now."

'Wow, this is going to be an interesting evening.' I thought to myself. 'And we have barely gotten in the front door.'

"Well, let's not block the door and let them come in." said George, "we're waiting on one of your county councilmen from White county to show up. You probably know them as well. Oh, he's pulling in now."

I turned around and uncle Steve and aunt Caren pulled in behind the 4 Runner. The color drained from my face.

Kelly noticed and asked, "Are you part Chameleon Scott? I've never seen anyone change their facial color as fast as you."

"Oh...shit! Um, that...that's my aunt and uncle." I blurted out then, "Er, sorry about that."

Everyone busted a gut at my response.

Laughing, "Well so much for keeping our off color comments to ourselves." Quipped Kenz.

My ears turned red again.

"Inside joke? I presume." George said.

"I've been busted," I said, "I had suggested to the girls to keep our off color comments like that to ourselves until we gauged the company tonight."

Kelly's eyes were watering now with her laughter.

As Caren got out and Steve joined her from the drivers seat and started walking our way I said, "You see, I was supposed to take the girls past to meet her and haven't done so yet so I will probably catch it when she sees us."

Sure enough, "Scott you little shit! I have to come all the way to Metropolis to meet your new girlfriends!"

"Sorry aunt Caren, I've been kinda busy the past couple of weeks."

"That's no excuse nephew, we only live six miles from you."

"You're right, we could have stopped by the other night when we were taking Sam a ride in the new truck. I just didn't think about it." hanging my head.

"Girls, I'd like you to meet my aunt Caren and uncle Stan Stiles, Caren and Stan, this is Makala and Makenz Jones from Fairfield. They go by Kala and Kenz." gesturing to them both respectively then putting my hands at the small of the backs of both girls and gently pushing them toward my aunt and uncle.

"Pleased to meet the both of you, finally." Caren said, "You two will have to keep my nephew in line, he seems to sometimes forget to properly introduce his friends to some of us."

"Damn! Scott, where did you find these two beauties?" Shaking both of the girls hands before saying, "Pleased to meet you two." Stan said.

"Just lucked into finding two diamonds that needed picked up and polished slightly." I replied.

The girls' blushes were not going away anytime soon as they beamed at the complements.

George spoke up and said, "Well, enough of the chit chat, let's get inside so everyone can get introduced and have some supper. The getting to know each other can happen over dinner and afterwards while we have our discussion about foundations."

'Well that confirmed my suspicions about the purpose of the dinner party since he told me that Rob, Pete and Jim had been invited as well.'

As we moved further into the foyer, Kelly leaned over to my ear and whispered, "You're dangerous."

"What?" I asked.

"Seriously? Slightly polished diamonds?" With a smirk.

"Giving a complement makes me dangerous?"

"One like that certainly does. At least to those girls hearts." she whispered, then raising an eyebrow my direction, "Are you really that naive? Oh, wait, you're an engineer."

I just looked at her with my mouth open and her grinning like the Cheshire Cat.

I looked up and noticed Kala giving me a funny look.

We went into the living room and was introduced to several of the area movers and shakers including the mayor of Metropolis and his wife along with presidents and spouses of the local Chamber of Commerce, County council, city council as well as the mayor of Carmi and folks that I already knew well. Two couples from Edwards county had been invited but were unable to attend.

The girls were immediately surrounded by Susan their former teacher, Rob's wife Connie Kates who worked at their high school along with Kathy a friend of Gram's and Jim's wife and Madge Temple.

"Oh wow!" Kala exclaimed, "I thought that Ms. Stone and Madge would be the only ones we would know here."

"You girls are out of high school now so you can call me by my first name." Susan said.

"That goes for me as well." Connie piped up.

After a nice dinner that was served at a large dinning table that could seat twelve and the spill over into the sun room where extra tables had been set up several of us adjourned to the study to meet and discuss setting up a foundation to support our respective counties.

It was decided that trying to serve Massac along with White, Edwards and Wayne would be too much of a stretch since Massac was not bordering the other three. Two community foundations would be set up with one serving Massac and the other the remaining three counties for now.

Pete and I agreed to be outside members for Massac community foundation and George and John Stidd the president of Massac County Council and an accountant would be outside consultants/members of ours. These would not be voting memberships at least to start with.

Jim and Rob had both researched the bylaws and procedures of some of the other foundations in the state and presented their findings and ideas to the rest of us. Rob and Vincent Harris the mayor of Carmi had looked into the 501(c)(3) requirements and presented that as well.

My aunt Caren who was a member of the foundation that supported White County gave her thoughts on the needs and some of what was done in their foundation. She was not a big fan of the foundation that supported White County and felt that we were getting shortchanged every year from what was donated from White.

George, Tim Johnson who was mayor of Metropolis and Terri Titus who was the President of the Metropolis City Council would pursue getting the necessary paperwork and legwork done to get theirs set up with some input from Caren and she would also help Jim, Rob, and Vincent, the mayor of Carmi, to set up ours along with asking one of the two from Edwards County.

After we finished we went back and mingled with the others for a while enjoying light refreshments and some interesting discussions.

As we got ready to leave around 9:30 I said to Captain James, "Well, I hope we meet again and please stay safe in your stratotanker."

She replied, "Thank you. We have been deployed three times to the Mid East but we pretty much stay back from the lines of fire. When we are airborne we generally have a fighter or two that cover for us since we supply their go juice to keep them operational. Thanks again for the new fueling sensor."

"Good to hear. You are welcome but I was only part of it and I will pass on your comments and thanks to the folks at Warhammer since I am still involved on a project there." I said, "Well goodbye and good luck."

We said our goodbyes to everyone else and most of the folks headed our way were leaving at the same time.

Aunt Caren said as we started to get in the car, "Scott, call your brother and tell him that I expect him and Betty as well as you and the girls for lunch tomorrow. I won't take any excuses from any of you about not showing up. Be there by 11:30 sharp."

We got in the cars to leave and Kala looked at me and said, "Well Scott, care to share the little secret that you and Kelly were whispering about?"

Laughing, "Well if you must know. She told me I was dangerous."

"Oh, really?" from Kenz.

"And what was your response?" Kala asked.

"Just "What?". Then she replied with, "Seriously, Slightly polished diamonds." To which I replied, "Giving a complement makes me dangerous?" Then she countered with, "One like that certainly does. At least to those girls hearts." followed by, "Are you really that naive? Oh, wait, you're an engineer.""

"You're just pulling our legs. She didn't really say that." From Kala.

I pulled out Kelly's business card from my shirt pocket holding it so Kala could grab it and said, "Call her and ask her, her cell is on the bottom of the card."

Before Kala could respond, Kenz leaned in from the back seat and snatched the card from my hand with, "Challenge accepted."

She turned on her over seat light and dialed the number putting her iPhone on speaker. The third ring it picked up and Kelly's voice said, "Hello."

"Kelly, this is Kenz Jones from the dinner party. You're on speaker."

"Hey Kenz what can I do for you?"

"Weelll..., Kala asked Scott if he cared to share what two were whispering about in the hallway and he told us a big tale then challenged us to call you to verify."

"Baaahahaha." From over the speaker.

After she calmed down, "Well Kenz, I told him that he was dangerous to young girls hearts with his comment on slightly polished diamonds and could tell that he didn't understand where I was coming from. Then I remembered he was and engineer. Engineers are notorious for not picking up on cues from girls. Especially pretty ones like the two of you. So you didn't believe him then?"

When neither girl responded with more than open mouths, I said, "It's just that they thought it sounded a bit far fetched and that I was pulling their legs. If they don't close their mouths they may catch some flies." Laughing.

Kala said, "Thanks for thinking of our hearts but I'm afraid that he has already captured ours."

"Sorry we bothered you this late." I said.

"No bother, Pap's, Mam's and I were just sitting here talking about how nice the party was and meeting you three was the highlight of my evening."

"Glad we could provide you with the evenings entertainment." I said.

And we had a convoy headed back to White and Wayne counties for the night.

----------------------------------------

We had been the last to pull out of the driveway and as we got toward the highway to head back to White County, Kala asked me to pull over at the convenience station just before leaving the area.

"Scott, could you pull in so I can get me a bottle of water for the drive?" she asked.

"Sure, I'll get out and get it. Want anything Kenz?"

"Um, yes, get me a bottle of water as well."

I went in and got three bottles of water and returned to the SUV only to find Kala behind the wheel and Kenz in the back seat behind her and the double seat folded to add more cargo space on the passenger side. Kala shook her head when I started to get in the front passenger seat and said, "Un uh. Get in the back with Kenz."

I opened the back door to find the seat folded up and gave Kenz a questioning look.

"You and I are going to stretch out in the cargo area on the air mattress for the trip back." with a mischievous grin.
