I'm not a fan of present tense for stories but you did pretty well with this one - there are a couple of places where you slip into past, but it's a difficult tense to maintain. Interestingly I used to know a girl called Kate who could certainly be our heroine. I hope she has some further adventures, and learns to follow her instructions more diligently.
