Not to be a Bible thumper, but seems like the residents of Riverton forgot the Golden Rule. And in doing so, they run afoul of Matthew 7:1-2, about judging, lest ye be judged. After all, the actions of the people of Riverton, in shunning the Hillmans, means they will be judged themselves for their act of shunning.

People past or present ever change.

The past and the future and the present can have all to much in common. Playing well with others is easy to say, harder to live.
