I only have one quibble: individuals who have not practiced punching others would be better off using an open hand and slapping instead. Not only is it more insulting to the recipient, but the striker--"Jennifer""--would be much less likely to injure her hand or wrist.

One interesting aspect comes to mind regarding Jennifer's "permission".

At the time, in the words of the Judge herself at the time, she was not advising as an authority figure, but as a woman, mother, and grand-mother. Her advice resulting in a criminal assault .... openly, in court?

How would such a situation develop? Would the judge be required to hold her own woman/mother/grand-mother self accountable for inciting a minor to commit assault?

5 stars - it is just sad that most people (especially on this website) feel that the USA judicial system is broken and useless. However, having said that - what is the alternative? I could make a number of suggestions, BUT (thankfully) I am not a USA citizen and never will be.

I only stop there for fuel - I would never choose to live there, nor even visit for any reason - it is just too violent.

Short, quick, thoughtful and very entertaining.

Hilarious. IRL, women should not be judges. That rule is far more important than the very occasional exception.

I love the authors choice for the ending. I thought Jen was going to blow a big wad of phlegm into her mom's face. Either was acceptable.

Dumb. First off, most courts will allow the child to decide once the reach the age or 14 who they are going to live with... anyways, who cares because in your world the girl goes to juvie and the mom gets custody anyway! Yay!

I was thinking spitting (not putting Mamie on a spit!) My main quibbles with socking are that; a) 16 y.o. (unless coached) would not think to emphasize the judge’s directive; b) unless Jenn has worked on boxing, she is likely to hurt her hand, or miss her target; c) pre-considering that she might get the opportunity to do this thing few young females see as their fighting options is just plain remote!

I really enjoyed that ending, I gave it 5 stars. I laughed like hell when I finished. Very well written, when I read the judge's dialog all I could picture in my mind's eye was that female judge on television: Judge Judy. Damn I hate her and her smug attitude.

Your point about courts allowing kids 14 and over to pick the parent to live with is good. The problem is family court judges are at the bottom of list when it comes to capability. So they get hidden in familiy courts.

Unlike criminal courts where the judge gets more scrutiny with the appeals process, family courts are understood to be more flexible. So while criminal courts tend to follow the law, family court judges believe they are the law. Agreements and prenups can be set aside if the judge "feels" they do not meet up to their sense of fairness. Hence why their judgements tend be nonsensical. No standards.

It's a shame the judicial system gives judges godlike powers that mess up many lives to a group of incompetents.

I don't see the plot fault here. If the judge tries any sort of retribution the judge is going to have to explain and justify how she went from being an impartial judge to becoming the whore's advocate. That's the lawyers job. Of course at 16 she can decide for herself anyway, seeking emancipation if she has to.
