I can understand why a were, especially an Alpha, doesn't want to be called a doggie. That being said, humans like dogs - many of us have them in our homes. Helen is right - acting like a loving dog will go a long way to making a human comfortable. David should tell his were: "Stop complaining; we're doing this to make Jess more comfortable with us. And if it makes her happy and she thinks it's cute, why not?"
You need to remember that they are not canine based weres. They are marsupials which is a totally different species. So it is more than just calling a wolf a doggie, which after all is in the canus species.
Thylacine, tasmanian tigers, and their species cousin tasmanian devil are definitely not canus related.
