Author's Note: This is virtually a no-sex chapter, but it grapples with some significant plot issues that need to be worked out before we close up Book Four. We've only got short ways to go in Traffic Girl: Rita, and I hope you'll find that, in the larger context, this chapter is very well worthwhile in the end. Thanks for reading.

* * *

The date for Alix's move to LA came barreling toward us at breakneck speed. There was so much going on, Jess needed her out there. The agency was dragging a bit and had lost a couple girls, and the scuttlebutt was that it was to rivals. Kelly was still in Vegas most of the time, so Alix would stay at her guest house. Most of the appointments there took place at hotels, but one of Alix's first responsibilities would be to scout out an LA Hooker House.

But, first, we had to throw a going away party for her. It was a welcome break from counting down the days until Kat hit the twelve-week mark of her pregnancy. We were in week seven, and any distraction was a welcome one. Kat and Rita threw themselves into the party planning, and we decided to make it a fairly small and tame affair. Well, tame for us.

We hosted it at our house, and we kept it to the core Infinity group, which also constituted Alix's closest friends. Katie would be there, of course, but I was surprised that she added Jamie, the backup quarterback, as a plus-one. There would be Crystal and Jason and the Holy Trinity of Julie, Bianka, and Nikki. Brooke, Katie's nurse friend, also would attend. She had found juggling work and the agency too difficult and had just quit nursing. And, of course, no Infinity party would be complete without Gloria and Serena. The unexpected guest, though, was Gloria's fiance, Garrett. So maybe it wouldn't be such a tame night after all.

The weather in November was glorious, and Kat had the brilliant idea of holding the party outside. Rita came up with the master stroke of covering the pool with thick, clear polycarbonate and setting up a dinner table over the lighted water. I suggested that, given the elegant setting, we make the dress code formal. The girls enthusiastically endorsed it.

So here we were, scrambling to get the final decorations and details nailed down before guests started arriving at six o'clock. The caterers had set up, and we had hired a bartender for the evening. The dinner, a stunning six courses from one of the best restaurants in town, was impeccable. They had sent two chefs to prepare each dish à la minute. It was an extraordinary event, which had the feel of an intimate wedding reception. The girls had sketched out every detail, and it made for a perfect evening. It was even -- dare I say -- civilized.

At these types of events, I always watched how people interacted. The girls were all so familiar with each other, the flow of conversation was seamless. As the wine flowed, it only became even more friction-free. Except for one thing.

Rita wasn't happy. I could feel it. She sat two chairs down from me, and she wasn't her usual ebullient self. She made small talk, and she plastered on her TV smile most of the evening, but I could tell something was off. There were a couple moments, when she let her guard down, that I knew something was wrong.

But I didn't have a chance to address that immediately. The meal was littered with toasts and jokes and stories. As dinner wrapped up, the caterers and bartender cleared down and headed out. There was a smoldering anticipation about what would come next. After all, you couldn't have a send-off party for an escort without expecting some shenanigans. When everyone outside our group had left, there remained a touch of mystery. The caterers had left behind a small bowl and spoon at each place setting. Jess stood up.

"Thank you again for coming, everyone," she said. "I have one last course for us, and it's something special I made myself."

Jess hadn't told anyone about it, so we all looked around curiously. She disappeared inside and came back carrying a tray with two opaque plastic containers on it. Starting with Alix, who sat at one head of the table, she began to place single scoops of ice cream in the bowls.

"What is this?" Alix asked.

"So, my friends," Jess said. "I felt inspired and wanted to do something special for Alix. It's been a long time since I made my own edibles, and I wanted to try something new. So please enjoy this cannabutter ice cream!"

I heard multiple, admiring murmurs of "oh my god" around the table. Spoons clinked as people took their first, tentative bites. I noticed two things. First, Jess had given Kat plain vanilla ice cream. Second, Rita didn't lift up her spoon.

"This is amazing!" Alix exclaimed. "It's so creamy!"

"And it's going to get you high as a kite!" Jess said. "I made the butter really, really strong."

"I think the creaminess blunts the weed flavor," Crystal said.

The ice cream disappeared quickly. Kat volunteered to clear the bowls, and Rita almost overzealously stood up to help her. Her own bowl had gone untouched. I decided I needed to talk to her. The party, however, wasn't an ideal setting. Now that dinner had concluded, things shifted into a new gear. Julie and Nikki stayed at the table, engrossed in conversation. Gloria, Garrett, Bianka, and Serena relaxed on the covered patio and got a bong ready to fire up. Jess and Kat took the dishes into the kitchen and teamed up on cleaning. Katie and Jamie, joined by Brooke and Alix, dumped a small mountain of cocaine onto the coffee table. Katie, sitting on Jamie's lap, chopped and cut like the expert she was.

Rita went back outside to finish clearing off the table, and Serena, Julie, Bianka, and Nikki packed the bong and started passing it around. Gloria and Garrett sat at the bar chatting with Jess and Kat. I excused myself to the restroom. I almost turned around immediately when I saw the door mostly closed and the light on.

"I love when you don't wear panties, babe," I heard Jason's voice come from behind the door.

"I know you like to take me when you want," Crystal responded to him. "So I like to be ready and make it easy for you."

"Oh, fuck, you are so wet," he said.

"I'm always wet for you, baby," Crystal said. "You're so hard! I love it!"

As tempting as watching was, I didn't feel right about spying on such a private moment between two friends. So I returned to the great room. In the few moments I was gone, the party had ramped up. Katie and Alix, now with the tops of their dresses pulled down, were bent over snorting lines. Katie passed the straw to Brooke, and I admired the glimpse of her pink panties as she bent over to hit the coke.

"I can't believe I'm going to be in LA at this time next week," Alix said.

"We are going to miss you so much, girl!" Katie exclaimed.

"You're going to have to come visit!" Alix said happily. "There are some great clients out in LA. It would be hot to have them meet some of our great Houston girls!"

"I love LA," Brooke said. "I volunteer anytime you need me."

I walked past the boisterous group and took a peek onto the patio. Bianka had just exhaled a massive plume of smoke, while Serena held a lighter over the bowl as she took a hit. I saw Rita, alone, slowly working to clean up the table over the pool. With the sun down now, the shimmering blue-light white coming from the pool lit her up from underneath. She looked as stunning as I had ever remembered, her red dress made for her curves. The black Louboutin heels added a pop of contrast. Her blonde hair cascading around her shoulders, which were slumped.

I moved into the kitchen, interrupting a whispered conversation between Kat and Jess as they put the finishing touches on cleanup.

"What can I help with?" I volunteered.

"We're good, daddy," Kat said with a sweet smile.

"I could use your help, though," Jess said. "Kat is feeling exhausted. So I thought maybe I'd shift the party to a club for some bottle service. What do you think?"

"Sounds like a plan to me," I said before turning to Kat. "Are you okay?"

"Perfect," she said. "Just so tired. But that's normal."

"I think I'll stay behind, too," I said. "Kat, you just take it easy. I've got this."

"Okay, I'll send a text and get it set up," Jess said. "And get these hooligans out of here."

Jess pulled out her phone and quickly tapped out a message as she walked over to the crowd at the coffee table. Alix was on her knees now, fishing out Jamie's cock from his pants.

"Hey, everybody," she announced casually, "in half an hour we're heading out to the club. Bottle service is on me!"

A whoop went up, and Jess went outside to let the patio smokers know. I watched mesmerized for a moment as Katie encouraged Alix to suck Jamie. Gloria and Garrett looked on.

"See how small you are compared to him," Gloria told her fiancé, who just nodded.

"Get it all the way down your throat, slut!" Katie said.

She looked up and smiled at me. I knew she was playing at something, but I was too distracted to realize what. I smiled back at her. And then there was an additional commotion as Jason and Crystal walked into the room. Their faces were flushed, and Crystal was still smoothing out the fabric on her dress.

"That was a long bathroom break!" Katie called out.

"You have cum dripping down your leg, girl!" Gloria added.

Everyone laughed, and Crystal just waved her hand, playing it off as she kneeled before the cocaine. The atmosphere was raucous. Kat, coming up behind me quietly, slipped her hand into mine.

"Daddy, I'm sorry," she said. "I'm so tired. I need to go to bed."

"Do you want me to tuck you in?" I teased.

"I love you," she whispered, and we kissed good night.

I moved to the patio again, where Jess was taking a bong rip. Rita remained out by the pool. It looked like she was just staring off into space.

"Hey," I said to Jess as she held the smoke in her lungs. She nodded at me. "I'm going to stay behind. Kat's going to bed. I think something's wrong with Rita. I'm going to see if she wants to talk."

Jess nodded and exhaled.

"Okay," she said. "Talk to her. She wouldn't say anything to me earlier, but I think you're right. Something's off."

I chatted for a couple minutes with the group, and Bianka gave up to give me a lingering hug before they set off.

"I was kind of hoping you'd stay and party," she said, forming her bottom lip into a pout.

"One of those nights," I said, raising my hands innocently. "I've got a few things to take care of."

"Well, just remember," she said, her eyes bloodshot. "I wore a butt plug for you tonight, and you didn't take advantage of it."

I groaned half-seriously and watched them walk inside. Bianka lifted up the short hem of her cocktail dress and showed me a glimpse of the princess plug wedged between her perfect, olive-skinned ass. Next time, I told myself.

And, just like that, the house cleared out, and the patio was quiet. Rita hadn't moved since I last glanced at her. I strolled across the lawn to the pool. Rita stood with one hand on the back of a chair and still appeared to be staring off into the blackness of night.

"Hi, darling," I said, and she seemed to be caught off-guard.

"John," she said, her voice trailing off.

"Jess is taking everybody out clubbing," I said. "Kat turned in. She's so tired. I guess all that rapid cell division takes a toll!"

Rita turned and gave me a weak smile.

"So you'll be back later?" she asked.

"I'm not going," I said. "I'm tired. And I wanted to talk to you. Are you okay?"

"I'm fine," she said.

"You don't have to be brave for me," I said. My hand stroked her bare shoulder lightly.

"I'm not okay, John," she said.

Immediately, a chill went up my spine. Goosebumps rippled across my skin.

"Do you want to talk about it?" I asked.

"I don't know how," she said.

Each second of silence that passed seemed like minutes. My stomach twisted into a knot, and I could feel a tremor in my hand.

"You know," I said. "This setup is pretty amazing. And it's so clear out tonight. Do you want to look at the stars?"

"Sure," Rita said.

I hustled over to the patio and grabbed two blankets. Back at the pool, I moved away a few chairs and folded and laid down the blankets at the far end of the table. I slipped my arm around Rita's back and gently guided her to the makeshift palate. She kicked off her shoes.

"Lie down with me," I said.

Wordlessly, she followed me to the floor. I laid my head close to hers, but Rita had closed her eyes. She breathed deliberately, exhaling through her lips, which she had pursed into a tight O shape.

"This was some party," I said.

"Immaculate," Rita said, her voice barely above a whisper.

I looked at the stars. It was breathtaking for being so deeply inside a city.

"There's the Big Dipper," I said, extending my hand and pointing to it. "And the Little Dipper."

Rita gave a weak smile.

"You don't have to say anything, if you don't want to," I said. "But if you don't feel right, you know there's nothing you can tell me that will ever make me feel differently about you."

A few more moments passed in silence. Then Rita said, "Maybe not this."

The thump of my heart in my chest was almost painful.

"I'm willing to bet otherwise," I said. "There is nothing we can't overcome, Rita."

Her hand searched for mine and pulled it to her chest. I could feel the insistent beating of her heart.

"I might have ruined everything, John," she said.

As I fumbled for some words to respond, she continued talking.

"It was a really stupid mistake," she said. "I don't know how I let it happen. I really don't even remember. And it's just."

She stopped. I squeezed her hand tightly.

"It's just that I don't know if it's something that can be forgiven," she said.

"Anything is forgivable," I said.

"Maybe for you," Rita said. "But I'm not sure how we all stay together. It's too much of a mistake. Too much of a secret."

The conversation dropped out again for impossibly long minutes. I felt the warm breath coming from Rita's mouth. I loved being close to her. A sense of dread settled on me, and I thought the unthinkable. What if this was the last time I'd ever lie with her like this?

"Do you want to tell me?" I asked.

"I do," she said. "I want to tell you more than anything else in the whole world. But I don't know if I can. I think I need all of us together at the same time. It wouldn't be fair otherwise."

"If you think that's best, then that's what we'll do," I said. "Do you want me to see if Jess can just turn around and come back?"

"No, no," Rita said. "Will you." Her voice cracked, and I noticed a trickle of tears coming out of the corners of her eyes. "Will you just hold me right now?"

"Of course, my love," I said.

"Kat needs to sleep," she said. "She needs so much sleep. We can talk about it tomorrow."

I glanced at my watch. It wasn't even eleven o'clock. Tomorrow had never felt so far away.

Side thought:

Given that Alix has a snort of coke every ten minutes, or is hitting the bong, downing a few bottles of Champagne every day, how could she be in shape to run a bidiness?

Party and Drama, does it get any better then that to have a fun going away party with lots of drinks and fun conversations and cheers then to have it follow up by some form of pending drama and a possible bombshell. Never boring around the Infinity group, waiting to see. Cheers

Yes, ramp up the drama and suspense. The story needs it. Rita was always too nice, hardly fitting in with the other characters. Kay needs something going on too. She went from main character to second thought and hardly a mention. Maybe the drama is to do with both Kat and Rita? Tv station sex parties? Pregnancy lotteries?

AnonymousAnonymousover 1 year ago

She is one of these: pregnant, sick in a serious way,; addicted to something heavy, like heroin or OxyContin; or in love with an outside woman and wants to leave the family.

AnonymousAnonymousover 1 year ago

She is pregnant because she forgot to take her pills and will be the unwed slut of the group.
