It remains fixed - forever young
black and white - unchanging?
Brittle now, with age,
freighted with memories
of remembered love.

Those smiles remind me of your kiss,
an act of love drawn forth by his love,
and of the hopes it generated.
Fixed forever in dreamtime,
where what might have beens live still.

Before the summer rains,
before the storms
which came too soon.
We lived in such times
as tried our souls.

As the skies darkened,
you were my refuge,
your love our balm,
and in those small deaths
came a larger life
and a bliss longer than life itself.

Your breasts against mine,
your gay laughter, your scent,
the feel of your lips, your touch,
our love incarnate, celebrated
and then, your warmth
against my heart's yearning.

He looks at you as I did,
for you were glorious my darling one,
a rare flower, an ode to love herself,
a life-force who gave so much.
My love.

And now?
A fading picture on the piano
of a fading old woman,
but the poet was right
what survives of us all
is love.

"where what might have beens live still"... that is a fantastic line.

Gorgeous piece with all the vagueness that poetry allows - makes me ponder the twists of that relationship. The concluding reference is encapsulating. So many memories.
