GRANDFATHER’S LESSONS

The land where I dwell is a place of Light
And every child knows it’s stronger than night

The same is said of Love from the heart
For it banishes Hatred, like Light does to Dark

It seemed very simple as a wee small sprite
As Grandfather taught us in the Darkness of night

In our cave we would sit, alone in our fright
It seemed so heavy...so void of all Light

A flash was struck with skill and with might
A small flickering Flame that lit up the night

Where is Darkness, he asked with a smile
And with joy we would shout, gone for awhile

That Hatred is weak, Grandfather left for a day
When we were older, be patient he’d say

Grandfather was wise in that so special way
But he knew that Hatred would visit one day

And with tears in his eyes he knew it was near...

I remember that day when Hate came along
A Phantom so stealthy slithered in unknown

Like the wee little snakes with whom we played
But the snakes were all kind and skittered away

Not so the Phantom that slithered near that day…

A word was said, when we were at play
The Phantom was there, awaiting this day

A shout and a tug, a pushing away
The Phantom was there making his play

The word from a place covered in cloud
I Hate you was said, and right out loud

Hate and pain I flung all around
To the one that I loved, then I cried out loud

The Phantom leapt forth from me and she fled
His bite was cruel and our young hearts bled

That’s when I remembered what Grandfather had said...

It is time he called, to me and to her
To learn the lesson, the lesson of Love

The pain you now have can go on for years
He held us close and then there were tears

These tears are your Soul trying to slay
The stain, the pain, Hate left here this day

To help Soul fight as she sings her song
I’ll show you the secret to help Her along

A simple thing once Hate has it’s way
Impossible to know until that very same day

But now you see how bitter the pain
It will get much worse unless it is slain

You already know we eat every day
And without our food we will all blow away

This Phantom you fear is just the same way
Hold back his food and he will just fade away

In a moment He’s gone, like leaves blown astray
And now I will tell you the words you must say

He brought us together, bowed in our shame
He held us tight lest Phantom remain

Now are the words long passed down
They’ve saved every soul of the ones who have found

The Phantom is weak, he holds no ground
Unless we allow him to just stay around

But with two magic words I show the way
The words the Wise Ones first learned to say

Repeat the words one by two
First go you and then goes you

Wide eyed we stared but held back our tear
Our eyes all wide for magic was near

But Grandfather's smile lit up his face
We knew all along we were still very safe

Still tingling we clung like two small birds
Then he whispered just two short simple words

‘I’m Sorry’, he said, and those are the two
They hold us together like very strong glue

To chase off Phantom back into the night
We knew straight away his words were just right

Already we knew he was so very wise
It was easy back then to take his advice

Turning I said to my dear young friend
I'm sorry I said those words that offend

Like the magic pool that reflects what I see
Her own two words flew back to me

Tears were now Joy, the Phantom was banned
And off we went hand holding hand

Wiser now that we had been told
The secret of life where Love can grow old

The Light now so pure, the songs so sweet
Grass in our toes tickling our feet

Grandfather smiled, although we were gone…the Love of a child, may it always live on…
