He is here again
As if he never left
Deep inside my chest
Hard to breathe

Haven’t you been scared?
What did you think I would do
When you snuck up
You were not innocent yourself

Please go
I didn’t mean to
I didn’t know
Please forgive me. It was war.

Can’t you let me rest
Give me a day of solitude
Let me sleep once
Without nightmares

Let me go through
A day of peace
Where I can see
A child and smile

I beg you
Can’t you understand?
I was young and scared
It was dark

Please go
I didn’t mean to
I didn’t know
Please forgive me. It was war.

Outstanding Poem (5 Stars)

My comment is just to say thank you.

No I am not like you but I understand. Just as you, friends, comrades, and loved ones all gone before. We are still here and only have support from those around US. Those who have been there done that from the previous to the current wars know and understand.

Your writing shows a brilliance of imagination and knowledge of history and modern science that most without our background will ever see. It is actually fun to read and see the images you create with words.

Thank you again not just for this poem, but for all of your interesting stories.

My English professor stated "Poetry paints emotions with the fewest words possible." He was right and your words prove it for me. dragoth7: almost 50 for me and the smells and sounds that come in the night are as real now as they were then.

Well written poem. It's been 30 years for me and I still sometimes have nightmares. Thank you for expressing many a veterans feelings.

I never read poetry. Don't know why I read this, but it is so very moving. You captured "it".
