Memories, he couldn't help but drift back to his first meeting with Jade. At the time, he ran his little mobile food caravan in Paraparaumu beach.

He recalled the first time he saw her.

"Yo, bro. What's the chance of getting a couple of burgers?" She had asked.

He took in her gorgeous olive skin, her big eyes, the mass of curly black hair that sat uncontrolled beneath her wide brimmed sun hat. Those damned eyes, were like magnets, he couldn't help but stare into the deep oceans of light.

"Yeah, can do. What do you want? Chicken, beef, venison, goat. I got it all."

"Goat..." She gasped. "Ewww, no thanks. Maybe a chicken, or beef? One of each."

"You're missing an opportunity. The goats awesome."

She shivered, but giggled. "I reckon the only thing I'd be missing is daihorea."

"Wow, that hurts. My food is better than that."

"Yeah, sorry dude, I was trying to make a joke. I'm a bit stuck in my ways you know. I'm not really adventurous when it comes to food."

"No offence taken. Beef and chicken it is." For the first time, he noticed the girl in the wheelchair beside her. He pointed discreetly. "Family?"

Jade, turned following his eyes. "No, I'm her carer. I have been looking after her for six months."

"Wow, kudos to you. Must be amazingly taxing work."

"It has it's moments. She replied. "Although, the highs make it all worthwhile."

Dillon nodded, as he started to cook the food. Being lunchtime, there was a growing line of customers building up. He would have loved to chat with her, but he was now inundated with orders.

Toiling away in the van, no air-con, only the big open serving hatch for some cool air. He couldn't stop staring at the girl. She must have been only eighteen or so, about the same age as himself. It was just something about her. He was drawn to her. She might not have been a beauty queen, but she exuded a warmth, and she was cute. That cute upturned nose, and her lips, holy shit. So full and delicious. He could get lost in a kiss there.

He called out her number, and handed the burgers and fries through the hatch, along with a coke and lemonade.

Surprised at all that he held out she said concern evident in her squeaky voice. "I didn't order all that?"

"Hey, it's on the house okay. You're doing an amazing thing. My way of paying it forward, and saying, thanks for being a sweet human."

She looked stunned. "I can't let you do that." She looked at him, and the van. He clearly wasn't well off. "Let me pay for it."

Dillon, held up his hand. "No can do. Sorry, I'm really busy. Enjoy the food."

She smiled at him, with gratitude. "Thanks, I'm Jade, by the way."

"Dillon," he called as he watched her walk away. Damn she was a cutie. Back to work he went, flat out as it had been every day since he set up here at the beach. It was holiday season, and there were plenty of holiday makers around.

It was going to be a long day.

It was nine O'clock the coolish night air closing in. As he finished up cleaning down the work surfaces, and put away the utensils. Getting ready to go home he heard that voice.

"Hey Dillon."

Stunned he glanced up, pleasantly surprised. "Wow, Jade. Nice to see you."

"I just wanted to stop by and say thanks again for the food. That was really sweet of you."

"Nah, no biggie. You're doing amazing shit helping that girl."

She frowned a little. "I get paid for it, like it is a job you know that... Right?"

"Doesn't matter. It's how you do it that matters. I saw the way you were with her. You care, and that's what makes the difference."

"Thanks, I wish everybody thought that way."

"So what's the problem with the girl?"

"Cerebral Palsy. She's really struggling at the moment. I live with her, full time carer like."

"Sweet, who looks after her while you're not there?"

"Her Mum comes around most nights to give me a break. She'll be there for an hour or so. I wanted to say thanks, then have a stroll along the beach before going back. By the way. The food was delicious, I mean really yummy."

"Glad you liked it. Where abouts do you live?"

She pointed back towards the houses that stretched along the coast. "Over by the motorway, Pearson street. What about you?"

"The caravan park. I'm from the Hutt. I got a permit for the summer to run the van here."

She giggled, and it sounded very sexy. "No way, I'm from Trentham."

"Yeah, bugger me, I'm from Wallaceville. By the station."

Things went awkwardly quiet, so he asked. "Would you like some company on your walk?"

"That'd be choice."

He locked up the van, and off they went. There were still kids playing on the beach, games of chasings as the darkness set in.

"What got you into caring for the disabled?" Dillon asked.

"My brother. He was disabled, and I sort of defaulted to being his carer. Mum and Dad both worked. I'm not complaining like. I loved him, and loved looking after him. He was special."

"Was?"

She nodded, her eyes suddenly full of sadness. "He died two years ago. That's when I decided to do it full time. Went to polytech, did the training and here I am."

"The girl today, is she your first?"

"No, I've had a couple of others. This is my first live in position though. Kayla, is amazing. Really sweet. I have enjoyed caring for her."

"Yeah, I saw the connection. She obviously likes you as well."

As they walked, they took off their shoes and paddled in the shallow calm waters. They talked about growing up in the Hutt, about life.

"So, Dillon. How come you ended up running a food caravan, did you have to train as a chef?"

"Nah, I haven't exactly been a model citizen. Got involved in drugs, got sent off to borstal. My parents didn't want anything to do with me. I never even finished fifth form." He laughed bitterly. "Didn't even get school cert."

"Wow, I'm sorry you went through that. It must have been awful."

"Nah, all good. I worked different jobs, but I'm a bit of a rebel, a loner. I got into trouble, cos I hated being told what to do."

She sniggered. "I would never have guessed that. Still... How did you end up with the van?"

"A mate was selling it, I'd worked for him a few times, and enjoyed it. He let me pay him back over six months. It sorta worked out for both of us."

"You are really popular, I get that cos your food was on the money dude."

"Thanks, I'm trying new shit all the time. I don't wanna be selling the same shit as everybody else. I'm trying to do shit my way."

"How come you're staying at the caravan park?"

"It's cheap. The vans doing okay, but I hardly make a killing."

They wandered back to the van, and Jade, said. "Thanks for walking with me. I enjoyed it."

Dillon tried to think of something to say, some way in. "Any time, I enjoyed it as well. The beach, warm water, a pretty girl. It was heaven for me."

"Cheeky bugger, but thanks. I'm hardly pretty."

"Bullshit, stop surfing for compliments. You're bloody gorgeous, and I think you know it."

She ruffled, her jet black curly hair. "Not with this mop."

"Bloody gorgeous, and I mean that. The hair suits you, I think it mirrors your personality. A little wild, definitely free."

She wandered away, and he watched her go until the darkness enveloped her.

Jade, stopping for lunch became a regular thing, she came a little earlier, so Dillon could sit with them and chat. He liked her, and they had a connection. Every day that connection tightened a little, the conversations deepened, Nothing was off limits. Dillon, loved her sense of humour, not everybody got him. He could be a little dark. Jade, even when he pushed the boundaries, she got it.

It wasn't just Jade, Kayla, liked him as well. She often talked about Dillon, on the walk back to their home. Jade, realised early that Kayla had a crush on him.

"You like him like him, aye sis?" She giggled enjoying the blush on Kayla's, cheeks.

"He is lovely isn't he?" Kayla answered. "I think he likes me."

"He does like you." Jade said, leaning down to cuddle Kayla. "How could he not like a hottie like you babe."

The day Jade, turned up alone, red eyed and distraught. Dillon rushed out to sit with her."What happened?"

"I don't know. She was okay when I tucked her into bed, and I checked her during the night." The tears literally gushed from Jades eyes, her cheeks saturated. Dillon, drew her into an embrace holding her tightly.

"Then, I went in this morning." Jade sobbed. "She was cold, and lifeless. I realised she had passed during the night. It was awful. I panicked, didn't know what to do. I blame myself. I should have checked her."

"Calm down, Jade. You couldn't be awake twenty four hours a day."

"Calm down." She snapped. "You didn't see her, she was dead. Do you understand... Dead..."

"I understand Jade. I wasn't being a smart arse. You have no need to blame yourself."

"What would you do?" She responded sarcastically.

"Blame myself." Dillon sighed. She pushed her face into the side of his neck, her face wet, tears staining his T- Shirt. He realised, words weren't going to fix this, all he could do was hold her.

The growing line of customers at the food van window, became restless. "Wait here, I'll be back." He wandered over to the van, and pulled down the serving window hatch. "Sorry guys, we've had some bad news. I'm gonna be closed today."

They were unhappy, but sometimes, you just have to live with it.

"You didn't have to do that."

"Yes I did. Lets go for a walk down the beach." He held her hand as they wandered aimlessly along the golden sands. Kids and families played noisily but they walked past as if they didn't exist.

"What did her Mum say?" Dillon asked.

"She was like you, as upset as she was. She said not for me to blame myself. She tried to make it better by saying Kayla was now in a better place."

"Well that might be true."

She peered up at him. "You never struck me as religious."

"I'm not, but I don't know that I believe that there's nothing there after we die. At least she didn't suffer. She is pain free now."

Jade stopped, and turned to face him, her body leaning against him. Her arms slid up over his shoulders, and she kissed him. Her luscious lips crushed his and the kiss melted everything. The world stopped, time stood still.

Dillon let his hands slide around her waist holding her tighter, his head sun wildly as he tried to grasp what was happening.

Jade felt her pain easing, Dillon's body melding to hers somehow made everything better.

"Where are you staying tonight?" He asked.

"I was going back to my parents place."

"Stay with me."

She looked at his piercing grey eyes, felt his heart beating. "I'm not sure I'd be good company."

"All I was offering was a shoulder to cry on, and somewhere to sleep. I can cook you know."

Jade smiled for the first time all day. "Don't worry, I got that."

Jade did stay the night, and it was the start of a new phase in their relationship. It wasn't sexual, it was love. She slept the night on Dillon's bed, but all that happened was snuggling and cuddling.

In the morning, Dillon accompanied Jade to Kayla's parents house. It was an emotional morning. He watched more as a spectator, as Jade and Kayla's mother talked. They sorted through photographs and music for the funeral. It wasn't until lunch time crept around, that Dillon took control.

When Jade moved to start doing something for lunch. Dillon said. "No, you help out. They need you. I'll look after the food okay?"

"But you don't know where anything is."

"I've got this. It's a kitchen, I'm good with kitchens." She slipped into his arms, and kissed him, this time there was no hiding the passion. "Thanks, Dillon." She said before moving back into the living room to help and console Kayla's parents.

When he walked into the lounge area, they were all amazed at what he had thrown together.

"Good lord, Dillon. This is amazing." Anne, Kayla's mother said astonished that he had prepared it from nothing.

"Ah, it's nothing. It's what I do."

The funeral was not a huge affair, but it was full of emotion, and a lot of tears were shed. That night, when Jade went back to Dillon's place. They made love for the first time. It started slowly, but the passion, the desire it had always been there bubbling away beneath the surface. Like a raging beast, once released it ignited with a powerful explosion of pure wanton lust.

She didn't exactly move in, but she spent most nights there, and their lovemaking was the release they both needed.

It all came crashing down though, when Jade, got her next assignment. It was again a live in assignment.

"Don't do it Jade. Why not come and work with me, I could use an assistant."

She winced, hating she was about to turn him down. She had thought about exactly that herself, but she loved working with the disabled. She adored Kayla, and her new client Amy seemed really nice. "I can't do it, Dillon. I love my job, I love being able to be able to do something positive."

He sighed, resigned to the fact, it was an argument he knew he couldn't win. The good news was. It wasn't a permanent placement. This was a temp position whilst Amy's, regular carer went on holiday for two months.

Jade and Dillon found themselves finding sneaky times to make love. Dillon visited Amy's little flat. After she was asleep, or when Amy's parents took her with them.

It wasn't perfect, but it kept the fires burning.

Over the next twelve months, Jade took on several clients, on temporary basis. Filling in where ever she could.

Dillon focused on making money. He needed to offer Jade, something more than the caravan at the camping ground. Luckily for him, his talent built the business. He eked out a growing reputation for top quality food.

He wasn't just making fish and chips, hot dogs and burgers. His food was much more than that.

The day he picked up Jade from her clients house. He drove her to the house he wanted to rent.

"Where are we going?" She asked

"I've got something I want to show you." He said smiling across at her.

"Sounds mysterious, come on spill dude. Where are we going?"

"Nah, it's a surprise. When he pulled into the driveway of the little cottage, she stared at him with a shocked expression. "Dillon... Where are we?"

"Home, if you're up for it." He tried to sound strong, but it wasn't really his thing. He just hoped he'd read the signals right.

"Home..."

"Yeah, Jade, I'm asking you if you'd like to move in with me. I want to make this our home. It's not much, but the beach is a five minute walk. The shops are within walking distance."

She started giggling, and couldn't stop. "You want me to move in?"

"Yeah, I know it's not very romantic, but I like you a lot Jade."

"Wow!" She gushed jumping out of the car, and running towards the little green cottage. She turned back towards the car. "Come on then. Gizza look inside."

Dillon with his fears slightly allayed picked up the keys and walked up onto the little closed in deck. Swinging open the door he gestured inside. "Your castle awaits my queen."

She giggled, whimpering. "Why thank you M'lord."

There was no furniture, but the cottage was in need of paint, the carpet was shoddy, the windows were dirty.

She stood in the middle of what would be the living dining area and spun around. "Dillon, it's wonderful."

He walked up behind her, wrapped his arms around her waist. Let his chin rest on her shoulder, and said. "I know it's not much, but I got it cheap cos I offered to do all the painting and decorating."

"It's perfect, we can do it together. I can paint." She said full of determination.

"Good, I'll go down and buy some furniture tomorrow. Do you want to come and help me choose a bed?"

She sniggered. "Won't we need two... One for you and one for me?"

"Like hell, I want you for myself. Maybe I didn't explain myself when I asked you to move in. I want you to be my girlfriend, my partner. I want to make love with you every night."

"Wow, is that like a proposal?" Her teasing cheeky face gave away her real feelings.

"Yeah, I probably should have said love, not like."

She kissed him passionately, getting giddy and stumbling until they crashed together on the floor.

Dillon, kissed her back, his need for her evident.

With the door still open and nothing but the carpet to soften their fall. They made love, naked and unafraid. Jade's body wrapped tightly around him, begging and pleading for release. Her sex sucking him deep inside.

It was over quickly, ferociously.

It was tricky, Jade, working as a full-time carer, meant taking whoever she was caring for with them. That meant everywhere. while they purchased the bed, sofa and a table and chairs. All the things they needed to make their little love nest a home.

Love... A more driving emotion there never was. It fuelled their relationship, and it grew quickly into love. They were married within the year, and it might not have been the conventional marriage, but their commitment to it was just as strong as any normal relationship.

Jade had mostly had short term contracts, either filling in, or covering for other carers. It changed though when she got a call from a friend of her parents.

*****

"Jade, we wanted to talk to you about, Mark. He's about to be released from hospital. We need a carer for him. It would be just days at the moment. He'll be living here at home with us. It's just Peter, and I work full-time, and at the moment. We need the money."

Jade who did know Olivia's son Mark. She'd heard through her parents of his injury asked. "I'm not sure, Olivia. I heard Mark, hasn't adjusted well after his accident."

"No, that's right love. He's already tried to take his own life twice. It's why we need somebody there with him. We have spent so much money getting a flat built for him so he can have some independence. We need to be working as many hours as possible."

"I'm not sure I'm the right person, Olivia. I haven't really cared for somebody with issues like that. Perhaps somebody with experience would be better."

"Please love, even if it's just until we found somebody permanent. We thought because you already know him it might be easier for him to accept."

"He's only paralysed from the waist down right?" Jade, asked.

"Yes love. He has the use of his arms, he can lift things, and do most things. He just needs somebody to be with him. You're such a wonderful bubbly person. We thought you might be able to give him the lift he needs."

"Of course. I can cover the short term, but perhaps you could look for a more permanent carer?"

"Thank you." Olivia sighed, her release of emotion was unmissable. "God, that is such a relief. Thank you Jade, perhaps you could come up to the hospital with me tomorrow night and meet him?"

"Yeah, no worries, Olivia. What time?"

"About six thirty."

Dillon saw the look of concern on Jade's face as she walked up to the servery hatch. "Could I have one of those Salmon burgers please." She had to wait in line, and Dillon laughed. "Yes Ma'am, coming right up."

He couldn't really talk, the crowd was big, and he had to watch, as Jade sat with some other people around the picnic tables, whilst she ate her meal. She, as always fell into conversation with the other customers she shared the table with. Soon laughing and chatting.

When he finally found some space, he walked out and they hugged, her lips colliding with his. "You looked a bit worried earlier." Dillon, said.

"Not worried as such, maybe anxious."

"What's the problem?"

"I have been asked to care for a guy. He had a car accident and is paralysed from the waist down."
