"Guess we do." I didn't want to, scared what she was going to say.
"My flight leaves at four, it gets in right after seven... bring the kids?"
My panic was almost bursting out, "Yeah... why so late?" I asked her.
"We're picking up Lily, that's Samuel's daughter, then going to lunch, then the airport... Honey, are you okay? Are... we... okay?"
NO! I wasn't okay. "Yeah, I'm fine... and as for us, I guess you need to answer that one." After that, I was holding my breath waiting for her answer.
"Sweet, I love you and the kids, I'll be home and we'll talk about it, okay?" At least I was breathing again, but I noticed she didn't answer the question. "We just pulled into Lily's daycare, hon, gotta go... love you."
"See you at seven... the kids miss you, love you too." I was almost bursting with more I knew I needed to say but didn't know what.
"Bye." My phone went dead and I stared at it, hoping that Addie meant what I thought she did.
The rest of the day was sooo long! I went to Kayla's store and mostly just made a nuisance of myself. Kayla asked about Addie and I made up some story. Addie could tell her what she wanted later. Seeing Kayla, in her sexy but professional skirt and silk blouse, made me remember the night she wanted us to have together. If I hadn't been so worried about Addie, that thought would have done things to me. I had no doubt that underneath those professional clothes, what she had on would be very, very sexy.
I wandered around the store, thinking how proud I was that it was ours... and what might happen if...
I picked up Kevin from daycare, then Katie from school and took them to McDonald's while we waited for their mom's plane to get in. We got to the airport terminal at six-thirty. I've been there before, picking her up at the same airline, so it took us all of about five minutes to find Addie's gate and sat, waiting. Well, I sat; the kids were up, down, running around the little kiosk, laughing, and asking me about every three minutes if it was time yet, totally oblivious to the turmoil in my mind. And I hoped they'd always be oblivious to it, never know.
The kids saw her first. They were running around the kiosk and all of a sudden started screaming and ran, screaming in unison, "Mommy, mommy!"
When I looked around the kiosk, she was on her knees, her little overnight bag on the floor and an arm around each of our kids, hugging and crying, kissing back and forth. I stood, watching and crying, too, wondering how I had ever questioned Addie's love for her family.
When I walked over to her, she looked up at me, the tears falling down her cheeks; stood and kissed me, then hugged me tightly, like she had the kids, saying over and over, "I'm sorry, so sorry!"
We stood in the middle of the terminal making a complete spectacle out of ourselves; Kevin around one leg, Katie the other, and Addie and me wrapped around each other. She finally broke away from me and said, "Let's go home."

kitearesover 5 years agoI'm sure there will be comments about me sticking with it if I dislike it so much, but Robert does write very well and his internal dialogue can be compelling. I was curious as to where the pregnancy thing went and how far down the rabbit hole he was going to take them then after a while you have to see just how many carriages came off the track. He's also bloody good with the cliffhangers and now it's just a case of seeing how he ties up this mess. So, yes, the bastard has me hooked :)
The part where Matt pushes Addie to Tanner because he thinks she 'needs' something from him that he can't give is the moment this story went from consensual sharing to cuckold (the modern meaning), this was only compounded by the pregnancy sub plot and compounded several times over through Ch1-12 with the repeated thinking one thing and saying another. It is now at a point where he is submitting to a stranger who is using his wife. He also says he couldn't do that to his wife about certain things, but like her pushing her limits he must be willing to push his own if he wants an equal partnership with her.
Addie has threatened not only their marriage but their livelihood in involving employees in their (her?) games, this puts her children at risk. She has and been allowed to risk her safety (and that of the unborn child, whoever is the father) by both candidates by being allowed to play with then pushed to strangers in a strange town with no net.
She is then allowed to run off to the other side of the country with said stranger showing the ignorance of the 4 main protagonists, not just of general safety, but not clicking on the discovery of a new need of Addie's and the potential dangers involved in allowing her to indulge with the wrong person.
There is a whole speech from Addy about the need for communication, but neither her or Matt do this properly. They both keep things from the other be it their true feelings or things that an outsider has asked them to do. This stranger is also allowed to dictate who can have sex with Addie, to me absolute insanity.
Both husband and wife seem naive at best, thought the more we learn about Addie the more we learn of how weak she is during sex, him not knowing what a camel toe is but now, 10 years in the past a quick Google would give them so much information that they are lacking that would help them make an informed decision. Rather than do some research, they both seem hell bent on rushing head long into the next extreme. This to me, makes them stupid, that is the only reason from remaining ignorant in this day and age if you have an internet connection. Beyond weak and out of control characters, stupid ones come in a close 2nd worse for me.
Ironically the next chapter is 13 and I think it is going to be unlucky for some and I cannot see at this point, beyond being the father of her children (2 at least) and half owner of the company, what Matt has to offer her. He can remain the father of the kids and be in their life, he can remain as part owner of the company even after they divorce and she sets up with Samuel. On his part Samuel can offer her family life, the sex Matt thinks she 'needs' and the strength to replace (I originally wrote protect her from) Jonah. If this were the real world, Matt would be looking down the barrel of the life of an ex-husband who's kids are a thousand miles away.
The real shame of it is that richardl is a good writer and with strong and wise leads, he could, I am sure, write one of the classic series for LW.
