My eyes widened and my heart rate increased instantly from what I saw.

"Four armed males," I whispered to Lexa, giving her a running commentary. "Two with pistols... one with a sawn-off shotgun... and one with a... oh fuck."

I moved away from the spy hole.

"What is it?" she whispered.

"One of them has got an MP7... it looks like The Lees are trying to track me down."

"How?" asked Lexa. "You're always so careful."

"Brian. He must have told one of them where I lived. It's the only explanation."

"Mother fucker," she sighed.

I watched her move her eye over the spy hole to take a look.

"They're checking the flats," she said. "They're definitely looking for someone. They have a photo and they appear to be asking if anyone knows where that person lives."

"A photo. For fucks sake, it must be my file photo from the accountancy company. Brian must have kept a copy. If he wasn't dead already, I'd kill the wanker," I spat.

"Sssshhhh keep quiet... one of them's coming this way."

She moved away from the spy hole and gripped her knife tighter. It would have to do for now, there wasn't time for her to get to the sub machine gun. I checked chamber on the Makarov, which was more from habit than necessity. I knew it was loaded.

We waited.

We heard footsteps

The footsteps stopped outside the door.

There was only a two-inch panel of wood separating us from a group of armed criminals who were here to kill me.

I could have sworn that I could hear the guy breathing from the other side of the door until I realised it was me.

Everything went silent for a moment and I imagined he was listening for signs of life.

We waited.

An eternity passed until the silence was finally broken.
