I am having a hard time deciding whether to read past the few first lines of chapter 9, the confusion of which brought me here. In spite of your summary, I fear the missing piece will ruin Candice's story for me.

You did indeed miss a chapter. What you just read was Chapter 9. The Good People that run this website refused to publish Chapter 8. I'm not entirely certain as to why.
In Chapter 8 (the REAL Chapter 8) Bethany had become an agent in the employ of Princess Bedrohlich and was being used to spread disinformation and disrupt the intelligence gathering of the Court of Queen Titania. In order to assist Bethany in her duties, she had loaned her an enchanted item that allowed her to erase targeted memories from her victims and replace those stolen memories with false memories.
This loaned item was supposed to be used against members of Queen Titania’s court in an effort to influence political situations in such a way as to be to the advantage of Queen Eydis. However, Bethany had used the enchanted item (the trickster stone) to erase some of Katrina’s memories of high school and then to replace those memories with false ones.
Katrina was a girl that went to the same high school as Candice. She had a crush on Candice, but never came out and acted on her Sapphic feelings. Bethany implanted false memories that made Katrina think that she'd come out to Candice in the twelfth grade, and that Candice said that lesbians were gross and called Katrina a dyke and lots of other nasty names.
Katrina was given permission to whip Candice to punish her for her malicious, homophobic behavior. It wasn't until after Candice had been whipped that it was learned that Bethany had used the trickster stone to alter Katrina's memories.
It was a good chapter. I'm still not sure why they refused to publish it.
