Shortly after that, he heard the bathroom door open, and his mother-in-law left. A few more seconds after that, the music grew loud again, and then quiet.
Matthew exhaled loudly, trying to calm down. He quietly slid the door open an inch and confirmed that the bathroom was indeed empty. He crept out of the tub and poked his head out of the bathroom. The tiny recroom was empty. Everyone was upstairs. After another deep breath, he quietly went up the stairs, hoping to slip onto the main floor unnoticed. He did. He was lucky.
It doesn't get any closer than that.

Two comments:
