A very good and interesting piece. I'd heard about the film and saw a subtitled version many years ago, I was quite bored and felt it was 'of its time.'

Having read your critique I am far more interested and would love to see a version like you describe made, I would go and watch it. More importantly for me, I will try and find an English translation of the novel and read it.

i enjoyed this essay very much. it is both Informative and thought-provoking; I also liked the book far more than the movie (despite it being superficially and aesthetically pleasing). Your list of scenes is really great.

Perhaps, your idea of using interviews could work, however, I do somehow feel this is now overdone these days.

in general, it is rare that great books are easily adapted to the screen. There are countless examples of utter failures in this respect; where the subtleties are either not easily captured visually, or compelling, or as you have alluded to, either not appreciated or attractive for a wide audience.

That said, another attempt at adapting the story of O to film would certainly be of great interest to a lot of us.

Thanks for this essay, certainly thought provoking, not only about the particular film and book, but also about a lot of things not least of all this website. I am intrigued at the thought of your remake suggestion. Maybe we should get Lars Von Trier involved.

I Agree with your description of JJ film. Years ago I found a ten part spanish series of the story from 1992 (with actress named Claudia Cepeda in the leading role) which is quite good I think. English dubbed, producer was Éric Rocha, the same as for JJ's film. (I still have it !)

I think erotica should reflect the whole consciousness of the sympathetic reader, without regard to external standards of morality. You can't control what turns you on, and shouldn't try in the realm of fantasy and fiction.
