PS. After proposing how I thought a good O film could be made, I had to think of a film by Marguerite Duras I once saw, Le Camion, which I just remember as a man (Depardieu) and woman (Duras) narrating a story, with some minimalist supporting images. Fascinating, but for a very ' elite' audience. Before anyone accuses me of stealing her idea, I hereby credit I am indebted to her.
I see you have no presence in the Lit forums. Anyone who enjoys talking about erotica and has as much talent as you do might enjoy the Author's Hangout forum there. If you're not there because you through up your hands in frustration at trying to figure out how to log on, perhaps this will help. https://forum.literotica.com/threads/hints-and-tips-for-navigating-the-forum-side-of-literotica-especially-for-newbies.1596423/#post-97628131
Brilliant! Thank you!
But I take minor issue with this: "Above all I think it is the extreme apparent one-sidedness of the relationship between O and her men that is the issue, not so much the nudity or the whipping, so the makers would have to tread carefully."
I think erotica should reflect the whole consciousness of the sympathetic reader, without regard to external standards of morality. You can't control what turns you on, and shouldn't try in the realm of fantasy and fiction.
I read this and then found the film. I was both shocked and excited by it. Was very much taken by your suggestion as to how the film should be made. I’m slightly subservient but couldn’t go through what O had to. Love your writing and ideas.
I Agree with your description of JJ film. Years ago I found a ten part spanish series of the story from 1992 (with actress named Claudia Cepeda in the leading role) which is quite good I think. English dubbed, producer was Éric Rocha, the same as for JJ's film. (I still have it !)
Excuse my english, its not my native tongue, its the language you write some stories too.
As for the english version of the book: try google, i found it there!
Thanks for this essay, certainly thought provoking, not only about the particular film and book, but also about a lot of things not least of all this website. I am intrigued at the thought of your remake suggestion. Maybe we should get Lars Von Trier involved.
For those wanting to do some homework in this area, I can recommend the podcast You Must Remember This and their recent series Erotic 80s and Erotic 90s about the key movies that came out during those decades.
I may assemble my thoughts on O into an essay under my own name. But until then, thanks again for taking us to new and intriguing places.
