in the UK all my life (over 70 years so far) and I have never heard of 'Hunt the Gowk'!!
April Fool's, yes.
Pointless errands? Yes.
I completely agree with Anonymous.
Where I worked people were usually sent to the Stores for "A Long Stand" or "A Long Weight".
It seems that 'Hunt the Gowk' is mainly used in Scotland but the practice of sending people on pointless errands on April Fools' Day is UK-wide. I think it is unreasonable to send bad feedback and downvote just because the reader hasn't personally met the term - but that is happening.
Oggbashan noted that some are scoring this story lower because they haven't heard of "Hunt the Gowk" before. Geez, guys! a 10 second google search found "Hunt the Gowk" for me, and I live in the deep South of the USA.
Thanks for a fun, heartwarming, story!
***** to you!

Enjoyable April Fool story, nicely paced classic, where much of the fun for the reader is knowing the likely outcome but enjoying the MC's innocent bewilderment to the warm-hearted end. Took me back to when I was a wet-behind-the-ears apprentice and was sent to the stores for "skyhooks". 5*
