My guess is that Katie's Mom is already involved with MB. You've done a good job teasing it; I've suspected it since you've first introduced her as a character, but it's never been completely clear until now. I'm sure she is; the misdirection you've thrown at us in this chapter confirms it.

Bring back the multiple page submissions of the story. It's interesting to see the development, but if you want to keep the reader interested you have to make it longer.
