The mention of television and the station glass having survived "the war" was jarring.
Given the title, I assumed the time period was turn of the century or so...1890 to 1910. Not that UK tail stations changed that much until well past WWII (based on my visits).
Niceguy seems a bit confused as to when this story is set perhaps he is not the only one. With an involved series like this it is probably easy to get confused as to the period the story is set. It being in that era of "making do" that we all went through in the late 1950's to mid 1960's a time before a lot of the modernisation and "improvements " that were imposed on so many of our services and institutions. Perhaps some method could be adopted by the author to remind us when the story is set but also maintain the flow of this wonderful story. I remember those times.
