Click hereThe next morning, we made excuses and left early. Mary had her opportunity to insist that we stay for breakfast, but didn't. The kids were already up, and we said good bye to them. Myrna's mother hugged me and bade me take good care of her daughter. I hugged her back, whispered thanks for her acceptance and promised to do so. Myrna and her mother exchanged a few quiet words between them, but no one heard what was said. Politely enough, Vince and Mary walked us out to the car to say good bye, and we drove away. Between the sisters, appearances were saved, but little more.
On the trip home, Myrna was mostly silent -- alone with her own thoughts. I felt frustrated that I could not ask what she was thinking and invite her to talk to me. But that would have intruded, and was not my place.
