The story is absolutely repugnant. Not simply because the protagonist is a sociopath, but because the author is making all kinds of attempts to make him seem like "not such a bad guy", when he's a remorseless rapist and kidnapper. Even though I would dislike it just as much, it would at least be honest if the moral failings of the lead character weren't subject to being papered over by a writer incompetently trying to justify his heinous behavior.
