Great stuff, like the other said please continue this :D

This subject is rich with possibilies, but the delivery is modest.

I think this needs a rewrite.

The participants would naturally be experiencing a complex emotional journey as circumstances and possibilities developed towards the climax. Similarly, the experience of the time afterward would be in stark contrast to the roles they occupied earlier.

These elements are barely developed, but they really should be.

o engage the reader, the reader has to have some sense of connection shared with the characters.

(Though that connection may be positive or negative.)

One should really avoid make the story sound like the emotion-free narrative on the evening news.

I suspect that the author can enrich this considerably.

If not this author, then a similar theme and a different author?
