Click hereMar had one guard held at gunpoint, backing away from the rest of them. Tai was pinned just in front of her, taking heavy blows from four fists.
Cora wound up a kick, unfamiliar chemicals searing through her muscles. Her brain was making demands in a language her body had only just learned to speak. Her foot connected with the guard's ribs, and they shattered. He dropped to the ground.
Tai lowered his arms, looking up at her with awe. "Cora?"
She said nothing, wheeling around to face the other guards just as two of them dropped. There was one left. He wasn't scared like the other one. He kept one gun leveled at Mar, pulling another slowly from his belt. Tai was still getting up, his breathing labored. Della's gun faltered, something in it sparking. Mar was off-balance, his finger off the trigger. Their attention wasn't on the guard. It was all on her.
The guard exhaled, his eyes beginning to close. He was going to fire at Mar, after he blinked.
His eyes never reopened, his head hitting the ground well before his body did.
Della swore quietly.
She turned. "Mar. You'll need to carry Della. His leg is broken. We're leaving through the vents."
Mar nodded.
Knowing their attackers would come from behind, Cora let the others walk ahead of her. Tai led, wordlessly following her directions. They stopped under the vent.
Tai jumped up first, turning to offer a hand to Della. Mar knelt, letting Della step on his back.
There were more coming. Not very many, but enough to make it a problem. Della was struggling in the vent, his leg dragging behind him.
"Mar."
His head popped into view. "What?"
"Tor is with you all, right?"
He nodded.
"Tell him I'm with his mother. You three, take the cables under the bridge. You won't be spotted. Don't argue. Della needs your help."
He nodded again, disappearing from her sight. Fervent whispering echoed from the vent, but Cora didn't worry. They would listen.
She charged forward, around the corner and through the door. In this hallway, there were windows, unbarred. There were more guards, more heavily armed. One of them had his back to her, but the rest had already seen her.
The one with his back turned. "You can't win, Mar. We-" He stopped. "Wait, who- what the fuck are you?"
