Well written but... yuck. Not a holiday story to me, because there ought to be something redemptive about it to fit the genre, and this is just a bummer of rather unpleasant sexual pathologies (and somewhat overfamiliar, even if well done in this case).

Okay, so the author PM'd me asking me for comment on my comment... but did so anonymously so I can't respond anywhere but here, so I will. It's not that I think the prose was cliched-- I think it's well written. But I have read this kind of beaten-down-whore-takes-her-lumps story a fair amount. Okay, so there are few things one hasn't read here before, but precisely because the story wasn't just a stroke story but fairly realistic, I wanted it to go somewhere new and show me something I wasn't expecting and instead it pretty much played out as I would have expected and led the characters nowhere. I guess I just didn't find this tawdry slice of depressing, dead-end life of much benefit, however well crafted it may be.
