Part 1 -- Samuel

Sam was in his basement workshop and had just finished with his latest and hopefully his greatest creation. He was an inventor, his creations were his children, but unlike most of those who would describe themselves as such, Sam was a learned man. A professor of both computer engineering and Biomechanical engineering, his research and inventions focused on the possibilities for improving human kind as well as helping them interact with an increasingly technical world.

But now he had finally finished what he hoped would be a new start for himself and possibly the world and he needed to test it. However it wasn't like you could just test a new medical device on anyone and the one thing he did know, was that assuming it worked, his invention in the wrong hands could be catastrophic.

As such, he had come to the conclusion that the only thing he could do was to test it on himself. Now that might sound crazy, because if it went wrong, he wouldn't have anyone to fall back on, but he'd decided on this course of action bearing in mind the benefits it could bring to anyone that he tested it on. He needed to understand those, before there was any way he could risk it on anyone else.

He'd spent the last 5 years of his spare time working on it, designing a testing protocol and interface system as well as the device itself and now finally it was finished and ready to be tested. He held up the syringe that the device was in (not that you could see it) and checked the interface on the computer to confirm it was functioning within parameters. Confirming that it was, he set the syringe to the vein in his arm, slid it in and injected himself with the nanite. Observing the interface as it changed to confirm the nanite knew it was inside it's new host.

He watched as the replication protocol commenced and the nanite set about replicating itself the first 100 times. He had calculated this process should take about an hour and was glad to see the interface confirming it was expected to take 1hr and 5 mins. Only once stage 1 was complete, would stage two dispersal and further replication commence.

Sam headed back upstairs to get some food and as he walked past the front windows noted that there was a removal van outside his neighbour Jack and Rebecca's place. He certainly wouldn't be sad to see Jack go, frankly the guy was 100% an asshole, the type of guy who thought being aggressive and putting people down was some form of dominance. He'd tried it once on Sam and had been utterly unable to handle Sam's refusal to be cowed. Jack had then taken the usual route so beloved by bullies and attempted to intimidate Sam physically. Jack had never quite gotten over being face planted into the pavement right in front of his neighbours and held down in a wrist lock until he promised he would behave himself.

Rebecca on the other hand was lovely, Sam had always enjoyed those intelligent blue eyes looking at him, she had a lithe toned figure and lovely classic brunette head of hair. When Sam had first heard that she was a Barrister, he'd formed an initial impression, that seemed to have then been proven wrong. Much against that first impression all the evidence showed she was caring and feminine and he'd ended up wondering why she was with a twat like Jack.

However deep down inside he knew why, he'd see the signs too many times. She clearly had a strong submissive streak and he'd heard enough to suspect, she'd made the classic error and had mistaken aggression for dominance when marrying Jack. If she was, she would have a hard time leaving Jack and it became almost like a self fulfilling prophecy even if she knew he was a total douche bag.

Sam had a craving for a proper ham and egg mayo sandwich and busied himself making it, whilst he considered how his life might change with the nanites. His house was nice, but not large, he'd never felt the urge to have anything bigger, there seemed little point, when it was him alone. He was fairly wealthy, various engineering contracts over the years had seen to that and he knew that as long as he didn't go mad, he would never need to worry about money, £10m invested generated more than enough income to meet his current needs, although if some of his dreams came true, he might need more.

He sat watching the activity outside next door as he ate and couldn't help but notice that something was clearly a little odd. The van was nowhere near big enough to be moving them out entirely and only the douche seemed to be present. He knew Rebecca would normally be at work and her car wasn't there, but he would have expected her to be present if they were moving.

Glancing at the clock, he realised the time was nearly up for stage 1, so he headed back downstairs to monitor the transition to stage 2. Watching the screen, he saw the transition occur as programmed and the estimated time to completion of stage 2 flash up as a further 90 minutes. Once that completed, stage 3 would commence, interface set up, which he believed should take only 10 minutes or so, followed by stage 4, full diagnostic.

It was stage 4 that carried some real curiosity, what might it reveal, given that the diagnostic was on him. He knew he had some health issues, although nothing serious (as far as he knew), so it would be interesting to see what the nanites could actually detect and then what they could correct. As already mentioned, he was fairly healthy, but then again he was 50 and his body had picked up a bunch of niggles along the way, as well as the expected declines simply due to age. His eyesight was no longer perfect, he'd been having neck issues for well over 20 years and as could only be expected he suspected a few joints were not in the best of condition.

Glancing at the timer occasionally, he worked on his secondary screens, detailing potential experiments and tests he could perform to help determine the success of the nanites. If they could correct issues, how far could they correct? What additional resources would they need, how could those resources be delivered? He'd already stocked up on things like whey and protein supplements, plus lots of different vitamins and minerals, as well as an extensive stock of food in case his hunger suddenly increased, after all you can't make something out of nothing.

He'd been working away on scenario's and tests for some time, when the interface popped up to say that stage 2 was complete, the nanites were finished replication, were distributed through his entire body and the interface was ready to initialise, the button, proceed with initialisation yes/no was open on the screen. Sam took a depth breath and pressed yes.

He knew what to expect, but was still slightly surprised when an interface menu popped up in his field of view and a beep sounded like it was in his ear. The interface with his optic and auditory nerves was working. Thinking, he explored the menu's, forward and backward, remembering the terms and how a direct thought could take him directly to where he wanted. In many ways the interface itself was more of a reminder about the options that were available, rather than needed for him to control it. All he needed to do was think it and the action would be carried out whilst he was conscious and awake.

Scrolling through the various menu's, all bar one were currently greyed out, the only exception being diagnostics. Double checking the menu he selected full diagnostic and the system told him that this would take anything up to 3 hours, with the yes to confirm showing and flashing. Glancing at the computer interface, he saw the same menu was showing on there and thought yes to confirm. The interface in his optics immediately shut down, however on the computer screen a progress bar and results section showed up, along with an estimated time to completion of 2hrs 57 mins.

Sam carried on working for a while, before deciding to go back upstairs to make a coffee whilst he waited. He noticed out the window that the removal van was now gone, as were all the cars in Jack & Rebecca's drive. Glancing at the clock, he saw it was now close to 4.30 and he thought about how long till the diagnostic would be done. Immediately the display popped up in his optics, to show estimated time to completion 58 minutes.

Grabbing his coffee, he went back down to the workshop and puttered around doing things like checking his mails and the like, whilst he waited for the diagnostic to complete. After what felt like forever, a ding sounded in his ear and the menu popped up to say diagnostic complete, would you like to view the results. Glancing at the computer screen to confirm the same menu was displayed, he thought yes.

The results popped up immediately.

Subject: Human Male

Age: 50

Diagnostic issues detected:

  • Moderate trauma to C1-7 vertebrae
  • Mild trauma to T1-T12 vertebrae
  • Moderate macular degeneration (age related)
  • Moderate levels of internal body fat
  • Mild age related general body degeneration
  • Moderate joint damage to right elbow and right shoulder
  • Severe cranial follicle loss

Would you like to correct these issues? Yes/No

Sam, thought yes and then an additional menu popped up.

Please set desired physiological age and apparent age

Sam set apparent age to 40 and physiological age to 25, before hitting accept. Triggering another option to appear.

Warning, correcting these issues will take approximately 8 hours. It is recommended that the subject be asleep whilst the corrections occur to prevent discomfort. Do you wish to schedule this for the next time sleep is detected in the subject? Yes/No?

Sam thought yes again and a further menu popped up.

Efficiency recommendation: The body fat being removed during the diagnostic correction can be used to enhance the subject or be purged from the subjects system. Select option, enhance / purge.

This was interesting thought Sam, he had hoped the nanites would be smart enough to make this kind of options available, but he had been far from sure, thinking enhance, the next options arrived.

Enhancements available from available body fat:

  • Increase general muscle mass 22% - further sub options available
  • Increase penile size and testicular capacity up to 100% - further options available
  • Increase sperm production rate and fertility up to 300% - further options available
  • Increase overall body size by 5%

Sam examined the sub options within each category, he was generally happy with his size at 6ft 2 and sure as hell didn't want to have buy an entire new set of clothes, so he dismissed the body size option quite quickly. And whilst he might have fantasies about having a harem of breeding slaves, he didn't even have a girlfriend at the moment, so there seemed to be little point in increasing his sperm rates currently. He was well endowed with a nice solid 8 inch cock, but couldn't help but wonder what it would be like to be a bit larger and maybe especially a bit thicker. So he elected to accept a 1inch increase in length and a 15% increase in girth. Which then reduced the muscle mass increase to 16%, so he accepted that and accepted the yes prompt when it came up.

He also started having a look through the various menu options, with the main topics being listed as: Diagnostics. Physical Enhancements. Mental enhancements. Networking. Within the mental enhancements he could see a whole range of options, but initially he wanted to look at the two first options which were neural firing efficiency and neuron counts. The help options explained that both options would increase intelligence, the first through the speed of thinking and the second through overall intelligence capacity, with each one interacting with the other, however the interface also showed that gastrointestinal upgrades were recommended to be carried out first due to the increase in energy required.

One of the things that intrigued him the most was that both options had options for up to 150% increases, given that he already had an IQ in excess of 160, he wondered just what the hell his IQ would be if he increased both by the maximum? Looking at the options, what was even more interesting was that if he selected an increase option, it then gave him a list of the required additional nutrients he would require, broken down into specifics, along with recommended food options to achieve the result. It also warned that the enhancement could not be given an estimated time, due the nutritional requirement.

He had no intention of persuing any of those upgrade options immediately, the testing was underway and he needed to ensure the diligence of the testing and the documentation that went with that. He would stick to the criteria he had already decided.

Glancing at the clock he realised it was nearly 6pm, so he headed back upstairs to make a start on some dinner. He'd not even gotten to the top of the stairs when the doorbell rang and upon opening the door he was confronted by a decidedly upset Rebecca.

"Sam, thank god you're in, I didn't know what to do, I can't believe he's done this to me." She got out, whilst valiantly trying not to burst into tears.

Even Sam, far from the most empathic person in the world couldn't help but feel for her and held his arms out, inviting her into a hug. Although he was a little surprised, by the vehemence with which she accepted the offer.

"Shuush, everything will be allright." He whispered gently, as her efforts to stifle the tears suddenly failed. He just held her, surprised at how light she felt in his arms and rubbed her back as she sobbed into his shoulder on the doorstep.

Pulling her gently inside, he closed the door and just allowed her to let out whatever was bothering her for a while till the tears started to ebb a little.

"Tea?" he asked gently. She nodded between the tears and holding her shoulders, he escorted her into the kitchen and sat her down at the table. Putting the kettle on and pulling out the teabags and mugs, he sat down at the table next to her.

"What's wrong Rebecca?" he asked gently as she took his hand again, clearly desperate for some simple human contact.

"Jack," she finally managed to get out, "he's left me for some young slut.

"Oh." Sam said gently, whilst feeling his anger for Jack the twat rising inside him. He tried not to show it.

"He didn't even tell me, he just moved his stuff out today while I was at work." She continued between the sobs.

"Not good." Sam said sadly. "Let me make that tea, then we can talk about it, ok?"

Rebecca nodded sadly.

Sam made the tea and brought it back to the table, placing the mug in front of Rebecca. "Tea always helps." He said with a rueful grin and was slightly surprised when he got a small smile in response.

"So how do you know he's left?"

"Because the wanker sent me a fucking text message, look see." She said angrily unlocking her phone and handing it over to Sam. He read the message and couldn't quite believe his eyes.

"Bec, our marriage is dead, you can't give me what I want, so I started seeing someone else. I found out today she's pregnant with my baby and I love her way more than I ever loved you, so I've moved out and I'm starting a new life with her and our child. Sorry."

"So he literally never said anything to you before this?" Sam asked incredulously.

"Not a damn thing."

"What a cunt!" Sam said shaking his head in disbelief. "No offence meant Rebecca, I always thought Jack was an asshole, but this... I don't even know what to say other than Cunt!"

"You know what hurts the most Sam?" Rebecca said quietly. "I wanted children, he didn't. Then he does this to me when it's too late for me to have them." The tears started flowing again and Sam's heart went out to her.

Offering his arms to her, he said gently "come here." Pulling her onto his lap, he just held her and stroked her again, whispering that it would be ok as she sobbed her heart out. The smell of her hair was wonderful and fragrant and his guilt raged as she felt so good in his arms. Then his thoughts drifted to the wanker and he wondered if he should have broken the fuckers arm when he had the chance. He must have stiffened, because she suddenly looked up.

"You ok?" she whispered.

"Sorry, was just thinking that maybe I should have broken the fuckers arm when I had the chance."

Somehow that broke through the tears and Rebecca giggled. "I think I'd have enjoying seeing that." She giggled again.

"I'd have enjoyed doing it, you were always way too good for that useless turd." Sam said whistfully.

"So you never liked him much then?" Rebecca giggled again?

"No, he was always trying to be something that he could never be, you were always lovely, he was a twat. No offence meant, but I could never fathom what you saw in him."

"Trust me, I'm asking myself the same question. He pushed me to do so many things I didn't want to do. He was always right, I was always wrong, no matter what the reality of the situation was. I think initially it was probably the whole bad boy thing, you know how it is with us girls, but our entire 20 years together, it was always about what he wanted, never about what I wanted.

Knowing what I sacrificed for him, to have him then tell me that those sacrifices were worthless. It's hard to take. I can't even begin to work out what I should do now." She sighed.

"Well let me take one decision out of your hands right now. Your staying and having dinner with me, we can talk, then hopefully you can go home later feeling a bit better about yourself?"

"Ok, deal, as long as you let me help with the cooking."

"Well, assuming you want to, you can start by opening one of the bottles of wine in the rack and pouring a couple of glasses. I must admit, I prefer the red though." Sam said with a smile.

"Two glasses of wine coming right up, although we should probably let it breath for a little while." Rebecca said with a little giggle.

It only took about half an hour to get dinner ready and soon enough they were sitting down, enjoying the food, some wine and small talk. Through this Sam discovered that although she was a high flying barrister, she had never really intended to be one. It had only been Jacks pushing about how much she could earn doing it that had pushed her into it and it was only her field of speciality that had been her choosing. It also turned out that Jack himself had never managed to be that successful and Rebecca was the one that had been earning 75% of all the household income.

The more he heard about the way their relationship had been, the more he felt vindicated in his impressions about Jack being a twat and the more he realised that Jack was the typical beta male, trying to make out he was an alpha, yet having no clue about what it meant to be an alpha. They'd finished dinner and loaded the dishwasher and were on their 3rd glasses of wine in the living room, when Sam realised what a truly beautiful woman Rebecca was. He'd always known she was a total fox on the outside, but the more he got to know her, the more he found how beautiful she was on the inside and the little bits that she was revealing started to make him realise just why she had been with Jack in the first place.
