For the mid-'60s, "gay" as used in this chapter is an anachronism -- before its time. In "West Side Story," Maria could sing "I feel pretty and witty and gay, and I pity, any girl who isn't me today" and no one would snicker. By the late '90s, Maria was singing "I feel pretty, and witty, and bright, and I pity any girl who isn't me tonight." Between the mid-'60s and the late '90s, the meaning of "gay" had changed completely -- but not yet at the time of Graduation Summer.
That won't stop me from finishing the story, though. :)
