Unfortunately due to the 2019 film Captain Marvel has been confused to be a woman. In fact however, Captain Marvel was originally created both by Marvel and DC as a male superhero, also known as Mar-Vell or Shazam and appeared for the first time in 1967. Women superheroines associated with the Marvel/Shazam family have been Mary Marvel (first appeared in 1942) and Carol Danvers, who appeared as Ms. Marvel in 1977 and as Captain Marvel in 2012. The Captain Marvel film of 2019 was based on Carol Danvers. Captain Marvel has been gradually associated with a female character over the years by the publishers, who in my opinion tried to make the hero more popular for today's audience. I'm definitely into the female version and I love the fact that more and more superheroines who are not just beautiful women, but they actually promote a stronger and inspiring female picture, appear nowadays in popular culture. Nevertheless, I wrote this story having the original character in my mind. You may find more information here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Captain_Marvel.
