This is my entry into the 2023 Valentine's Day story contest. Please vote to help.

This is a longer story with a plot that takes some time to develop. Like my last story, I didn't break it up into parts.

The story includes group, lesbian, and anal sex.

Many thanks to kenjisato, who is my editor and made this better.

Chapter 1: Lemons

I realized as I drove into my school's parking lot, to start another year teaching, that I was having a mid-life crisis. Damn, I was too young for that. I'm only twenty-eight. Life was supposed to be good. I sat in my car in the lot, and took stock before starting a new year.

I'd been married to Cathy for the past four years. We're both teachers in the same region. We'd met at a training seminar and she moved to my place shortly after. We had a lot of fun until it became apparent that we couldn't have children. There was some issue with how my sperm reacted with her body chemistry that made it impossible.

This was a fundamental shift for Cathy. Her whole being was about becoming a mother. Hell, she went into teaching so she could be a better parent.

I loved kids, but I was less concerned about getting pregnant and more concerned about our relationship. I was devastated with the news, but was committed to having a relationship with her.

Cathy investigated every treatment, including artificial insemination and in-vitro fertilization. Adoption was not an option due to long wait lists. None of it worked, and all that effort was taken out of our relationship. She became distant and distracted in conversations.

We went to a counselor to discuss the issue, and she suggested that we develop some of our own interests.

Cathy took this to mean that we should teach at different schools. She put in for transfer over the summer, and went back to the school that she originally started at. It was an hour away, which just added to our distance with all the commute time.

I hated the idea as it took away time that we spent together, but she didn't tell me about the move until the paperwork was completed.

...

I was startled when a colleague knocked on my car window in the middle of my reverie.

I smiled half heartedly and waved to Anna, a social science teacher.

Time to suck it up and get back to the job, I told myself. I gathered my bag and lunch and headed into Bingham High where I was teaching.

Bingham was a suburb outside of Toronto. The students were diverse which reflected the population of the city. I taught upper year science and math courses, as I had completed a degree in engineering before going into teaching. I had a desk with the other science department teachers. We collaborated on lesson plans and frequently had lunch together.

I arrived at my desk to be greeted by Dani, our vivacious biology teacher.

"How was your summer, Andy?" Dani inquired. "Did you have wild monkey sex at all hours of the day with Cathy, all summer long?"

"No, it was more of a biology course-kind of summer," I responded, in a down voice. "We delved into our reproductive issues and the sex just never seemed to happen."

Dani realized that there was an issue, came over and said, "Sorry to hear, Andy. I had no idea. Jeff and I've had issues as well, but we have developed other interests to fill the space."

"Funny, that was what our therapist suggested, as well," I said, as others came into the office.

We were joined by Julia, who'd been a science teacher, but had moved into a guidance counselor role; Pia who'd only taught for a year and looked younger than some of our students; then Kenji, who was getting close to retirement.

We all traded quick stories about our respective summers, and then had to get to class to meet our new students.

Chapter 2: First Class

My first class was advanced physics for seniors. The curriculum was difficult for many, but if anyone wanted to go to college for science, they had to take it. I liked teaching it, and thought I did a good job of simplifying the concepts and making them real for students.

I was greeted by a class of fresh-faced seniors. You could see eagerness, fear, boredom, and indifference in equal measure amongst the group.

"Mr. A, how was your summer," Britney beamed, from the front row.

Britney was the head cheerleader and had the stereotypical, bubbly personality to go with it. She beamed her perfect teeth and even licked her already-moist lips for my amusement. I could see that Britney was going to tease me from the front row all semester. She was stunningly beautiful, but I knew better than to flirt with students, even though I knew that she was eighteen.

"I had a great summer," I responded, to everyone in the class. "Welcome to senior physics."

I reviewed the course in general with the class, and passed out the heavy textbooks.

"This is going to be hard," Evie complained, from the side. She was captain of the girls' volleyball team, and probably needed the class to qualify for an expected scholarship.

"You can make this hard," joked Chris, who played for the football team.

Evie was disgusted, but didn't have a quick comeback.

I filled in for her and said, "Chris, I can make your tests and assignments very hard this semester. I suggest you refrain from that repulsive behaviour in here."

Evie gave me a look of thanks, while Britney shot Evie a glare, when she realized that she had engaged me on her behalf. High school politics were in full swing in the first hour of class.

Chapter 3: Lunch Revelations

The rest of the morning passed uneventfully. I joined Dani, Pia, Kenji, and Julia for lunch. There were others in the department, but we were the closest and tended to stick together.

"What happened with Cathy," Julia asked, after we'd settled.

Julia was in guidance and knew that Cathy wasn't at the school anymore. She had been in the English department.

I thought of making an excuse, but then resolved to be honest. "We've been having issues with fertility and don't see any resolution in our future. Cathy thought a change would help her, and put in for a transfer."

I was greeted with puzzled looks from all around.

"How is transferring to a different school going to help anything?" Dani mused.

They could all see that I was struggling with this, and politely moved on.

"Look at you, Pia," Julia said, "I hope your wedding went well. You're looking very fit."

Pia was a pretty woman of Japanese descent. She was stylish with long black hair and her five-foot body looked very tight in her yoga clothes.

"The wedding was great," Pia said. "George and I travelled across the country, and I ended up taking up running to get in better shape."

"Well, the running shows," Dani said, with a whistle.

"How'd you have time to take up running on a honeymoon?" Kenji asked, with one eyebrow raised.

Pia blushed and said, "There was time for many things. I'll ask George about how Cathy is doing. He teaches at that school, as well."

Dani talked about her trip to a cottage with Julia to see a friend. "We had some fun times," Dani said mysteriously, and gave Julia a wink.

"Oh, to be young again," Kenji said, wistfully. "Don't let yourselves get in a rut or before you know it, you'll be staring down at boredom and retirement like me."

We all broke for our afternoon classes and then headed home.

Chapter 4: Cathy

I got home and did chores and made dinner for over an hour before Cathy pulled in.

I asked all about her day. She talked briefly about reconnecting with teachers she had worked with. Her responses were short, and didn't invite discussion. She was still in a funk.

I served the dinner I had made, and tried to regale her with stories from my day and how other teachers were missing her.

"I'm sure Dani is happy that I'm gone," Cathy said, sourly. "She hates competition for the men in the school."

"I haven't noticed any advances," I said. "She's married to Jeff."

"You know the quote that says if you can't spot the sucker at a poker table in the first five minutes, then it's you," Cathy said. "You're being prowled and don't even know it. You're oblivious to her advances and that used to be attractive to me."

"Cathy, I would never cheat on you," I implored.

"I know you won't," Cathy said. "I'm just not sure if I would care if you did."

"What is that supposed to mean," I asked.

"Maybe I'm just down about our future," Cathy said.

"I still love you, Cathy," I said, with meaning.

"I know you do," Cathy said. "I'm just not sure that I've any love left in me."

We went to bed after silently cleaning up. When I tried to embrace her in bed, it was like holding a lifeless log.

I let her go and rolled over to a restless sleep.

Chapter: Fall Blues

The funk continued with Cathy in the following months.

She took a role coaching the debate team, and I started helping with the volleyball team. It kept us busy and helped avoid the awkward silence at home.

Volleyball was a good distraction. I had played on my varsity team at college. I had some good game, but their real attraction to me was my height. I was six-foot-six and had a forty-inch vertical jump.

With the kids at school, I tried to coach technique and fitness, as I couldn't coach being tall. One bonus to this was doing the workouts and cardio with the kids. I demonstrated that the coach didn't only talk the talk, but could walk the walk. The bonus was that this was getting me in great shape.

All my colleagues noted the physical changes. Pia even started joining the team for the runs and Dani, who was in great shape already, started joining the girls' team for the weights.

After a practice, Evie approached me and said with a grin, "Mr. A, you're attracting quite a following at your workouts. I see what they find attractive, but I thought you were married."

"I'm married," I said, a bit defensively. "And so are the other teachers that are attending."

"You can believe what you believe," Evie said. "But I think they find you hot, as does most of the volleyball team. Mr. A, you're the best-looking male teacher in the school."

I tried to think of a smart comeback but couldn't, and just shrugged my shoulders and continued.

Maybe Cathy was right about being pursued. I wasn't going to respond to any of the attention though, as I was committed to her and wanted to make our relationship work.

Classes were going well. There were always the problem kids, but teaching advanced science weeded most of them out.

My real issue was with my classes, where there were unrealistic expectations for marks.

Kids had an inflated view of their abilities and when that clashed with the reality of an assignment or a test, they went into denial. Those that accepted their issues would work on their knowledge and improve. Kids who were in denial, tried all sorts of tactics to improve their marks.

Britney was a prime example. She was out of her depth on the math needed to solve physics problems. Her solution was to flash me her impressive cleavage. When that didn't work, she doubled down and started flashing me her crotch in class. It didn't make me more charitable with marks, but it did affect my other head.

Another example of this issue, was increased scrutiny of parents. Students would complain about my tests to their parents, and they'd want to meet me to argue about my marking. These were solved when they would come in for a meeting with their son or daughter. I'd show them the course outline, the curriculum, the notes I gave out, and finally the test with a marking rubric. It was hard for them to argue with these facts.

Some parents did go the extra mile, with one mother offering me sexual favors to improve her son's marks. I rebuffed all the advances.

When Cathy got home late that night, as usual, I mentioned Evie's observation to her. I thought I could get a rise or some interest out of her.

All I got was, "I told you so," from Cathy.

Our lovemaking had deteriorated over the fall, as well. I kept making advances, but was met with indifference and a lack of engagement. Until last year, we had an active sex life. It was somewhat traditional, but still fun. Cathy was good at giving head and I always reciprocated.

When I had tried to spice it up a bit by playing with her ass or doing some roleplaying, it was again met with indifference.

I found myself turning back to masturbation, and instead of imagining my wife, I now had a parade of women running through my imagination including parents, students, and colleagues.

Chapter 5: Christmas Explosion.

As the holidays approached, I tried to think of what I could do to improve my relationship with Cathy. She continued to be distant.

I was getting in better shape, and she was going in the other direction and putting on a bit of weight. It was probably due to less activity and increased commute time. I thought of what I could do and came up with the idea of getting a dog. It wasn't a substitute for a child, but would give us a sense of shared responsibility. Having a dog would be a commitment. They required training, walking, and feeding. I thought it would be achievable and get us both involved together.

I did the research on breeds and made the most standard of choices, a golden retriever. They had a great temperament and were loyal and gentle. They were universally loved by everyone, when you saw them on the street. I settled on a local breeder and agreed to pick up the ten-week-old puppy after our last day of classes. We'd have the time to socialize and train it over the holiday.

My only reservation was that I did this without telling Cathy. I knew it was a big decision, but I thought the surprise might break her out of her funk.

We still had classes for the next few weeks. All the team sports and clubs were approaching their culminating activities.

For me, this meant regional championships in volleyball, to see who'd go to provincial champs in the new year. Our women's team was strong, and the men's team had come a long way, and had an outside chance of winning. Evie had proven to be a good leader of her team and had used the improved physical fitness of her team to outplay other schools.

I talked to the head of our debate team and found out that they had their own event, which was a regional championship, as well. It was being held close to our school and a couple of days before classes ended.

My plan was to go to it to both support our school and support Cathy's team at the debate.

Debating wasn't really my thing. I always felt slow in coming up with a snappy response when people made comments, or criticized you. Afterwards, I'd imagine making the perfect comeback, but it was only in my imagination.

Volleyball championships went well. The men made it to the final and lost in a heartbreaker. The women won their regional championships and were overjoyed to be moving on to provincials which would be in the new year. Evie approached me to get extra coaching over the holidays for the team.

The debate championship was in two nights and was being held at a school about twenty minutes away. I was late with all the post-game work from volleyball.

When I got there, I hung in the back to surprise Cathy. Our team was on the stage currently, and her school was due to come up next. I watched our school debate the merits of pie versus cake. It was a humorous debate, and was clinched by the other team, when they used pie charts to demonstrate pie's superiority. Cake couldn't respond.

Next up was Cathy's school. They came on stage with their coach, which to my surprise, wasn't Cathy. Maybe she was the assistant and was waiting in the wings.

I waited for the debate to end and saw Cathy's school win the round, debating the superiority of messaging over phone calls.

After the round concluded, I went to the student area and still couldn't find any trace of Cathy. I finally approached the coach I had seen on stage.

"Congrats on winning your round," I offered. "Her name was Abigail and I vaguely remembered meeting her at a function in the past.

Abigail accepted the compliment, and it became clear that she didn't know who I was.

I quickly recovered and introduced myself, "I'm Andy, Cathy's husband. I teach at Bingham but wanted to see how your team did tonight, as well."

"Thank so much," said Abigail. "How is Cathy enjoying her move back to our school?"

"I thought you would know," I said, with some confusion. "Isn't Cathy involved with the debate team?"

Abigail could sense my confusion and I could see the wheels turning. She finally said, "Andy, Cathy came out to our first meeting of the debate team, but then suggested that she'd other commitments. I feel bad telling you this, but you should know that she hasn't had any involvement since the start."

I took a step back in surprise.

"Abigail, let me collect my thoughts for a second," I said.

Clearly, Cathy and I are having much larger issues than I imagined. She was lying to me and was spending a lot of time on something. My mind was reeling, but I had to approach this logically. I wanted to know what was going on, but didn't think I'd get an honest answer from Cathy.

I went over to Abigail and said, "Abigail, I want to thank you for your candor regarding Cathy. Clearly, we've an issue and I'd ask for your discretion in not sharing this information with her, or any of your colleagues. You know how rumors spread in a school and I wouldn't want to compromise her position."

"I understand," said Abigail. "I hope you find resolution. You seem like a genuine person."

I went home and sat there for a half an hour, before Cathy arrived. I didn't confront her, or try to catch her by asking about the debate champs.

"I was marking tests tonight," Cathy said. "We have the debate championships tomorrow, and I need to get this done ahead of time."

I let the lie slide and resolved that I was going to figure this out.

Cathy went to bed early, claiming exhaustion.

I formulated a quick plan and got on my school site and claimed a sick day. It was my first absence of the year, and wouldn't raise any eyebrows. I left some general notes for the supply teacher, knowing that very little really happened on the last day of classes anyways.

Chapter 6: Private Eye

Cathy was always first to use the shower, as she had to leave our apartment first. She'd left her phone on the nightstand, and I'd carefully tapped the screen to stop it from going to sleep.

When I heard the water start, I started scanning the phone and briefly looking at her messages. There was nothing obvious in her history, just messages amongst colleagues.

I went to phone tracking and activated the feature that would allow me to see her location on a map. At least, I'd be able to tell where she was without having to tail her.

After Cathy left the house, I tracked her movement and there was nothing unusual, as it showed her going directly to her school. Maybe I was being paranoid.

I grabbed my old camera gear that I rarely used now. Cell phones were great for most of my needs. The advantage of the camera was the excellent telephoto lens, tripod, and image stabilization. It'd help me view whatever Cathy was doing from afar, as I didn't have binoculars. I dressed in an old bulky coat, sunglasses, and ball cap to try and make myself less noticeable.
