Also this part from the story had me laugh crying for a good few minutes: "To her utter amusement, Mittens was sitting in the doorway on a chair, slowly and carefully eating popcorn out of a bowl in her lap, so as not to disturb them." Honestly best comedic effect you've written so far.

It is honestly one of my favorites too. Pure Mittens, really. It doesn't hurt that I could see that scene so clearly in my head it's insane. Hahaha
